General

  • Among spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Within walking distance of West Burton and Thoralby villages
  • Next door to a 17th-century inn serving food and local beers

Now these are views… head here with the camera for scenes right up any holidaymaker's street: Street Head Caravan Park, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is in an area famous for its scenery and unspoilt countryside, surrounded by grazing countryside with Dale views across to the fells beyond.

Roll up here to take in the local walks and wildlife – you can walk up and down dales and over moorland from the site – or use Street Head as a base for exploring the wider Yorkshire Dales, the north-east and north-west coasts and the loveliness of the Lake District. The park has a coin launderette, 20p coin showers, toilets and a separate washing-up area with free hot water.

Street Head Caravan Park is in the valley of Bishopdale and has five pubs and restaurants within a few miles; the nearest, the 17th-century Street Head Inn, is very handily placed next door to the park offices for meals and sampling the local brews. The village of Thoralby is half a mile’s amble away and has a general store, Post Office and traditional pub; a shop and a butcher are at West Burton about a mile and a half away.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of shower.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Third field not really suitable 23/08/2017

    Location, friendly owner, clean toilets.

    Disliked:

The end field was too sloping for me. It's only just on the edge of being able to cope. I was sliding off my air bed all night. It's also two fields away from the toilet. Too far really. There is a road that runs alongside the site and although it is in the dales it's a busy road with heavy vehicles passing throughout the night. There's also another very weird noise that I couldn't put my finger on. Perhaps a donkey braying in a metal field shelter. But it is the countryside so I'm nit picking there. The smell of animal waste was also really strong at times. Better for caravans than tents I feel.

Absolutely fabulous site. Yes, it was quite a walk to the toilet block, but we enjoyed the walk under the amazing starry skies, owls hooting. Plenty of space between tents, and thick windbreaks of trees between fields kept it feeling secluded. Easy walk to both West Burton and Aysgarth, so no need for a car. Very clean toilet block and washing up facilities. Very clean field.

    Disliked:

The only small grumble, though NOT a complaint, was that the site slopes gently downhill to the camping field, and the car parking is beside the tent. We had exceptionally heavy night time rain for 2 nights, and had to push the car up the hill. Other cars were also skidding, which left the field looking rather messy, which was a shame for the new arrivals. A car parking area at the top, or a gravel roadway to the bottom would get around this. The weather was exceptional, so don't be put off by this!

A basic campsite without the extras (pool, clubhouse) but this is what we wanted. Very clean everywhere including the showers/toilets which were cleaned daily. Owner was very helpful for any requests. Also had trouble finding the owner on the first day but later found out that his wife and daughter were away so he was running both the farm and campsite on a his own!!

    Disliked:

Tent without electric pitches are on a slope with only a few truely flat pitches. These pitches were also quite a walk from the main block which meant children could not use them on their own.

Family run, friendly campsite in an excellent location. 02/08/2017

A very friendly, family run campsite. Fairly small in size with enough basic facilities to enable us to enjoy our holiday here. Facilities included 2 showers (in the ladies) and toilet block, washing up facilities, laundry facilities, drinking water points, and an information area where there was also a good clean stock of books, games, colouring stuff, jigsaws etc. to borrow. Toilets and showers were very clean. The location is excellent only a couple of miles from Aysgarth Falls and mid way between Hawes and Leyburn. There is a pub next door which serves meals and a good range of drinks. The tent pitches overlook rolling hills on one side with a road on the other (beyond the road there are more rolling hills).
what I like about the campsite is that it feels like 'proper camping' as opposed to some sites you go to that are impersonal, giant, money making, holiday villages.
I think what makes this campsite is the friendliness and willingness to help of the owners, along with the perfect location. The owners are always available to help or advise.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was next to the road which although wasn't really busy, there was some noise and vibrations when cars went past. The slope in the tent field - although it didn't detract from our enjoyment of the stay it just made living in a tent a bit more tiring. That said, the pitches are at a good price compared to some other sites (sites that may have level pitches and no road noise). With this in mind, I think the campsite is priced competitively for what you get.

Directions

From the A1, exit at Junction 51 and take the A684 to Leyburn and from there, continue on the A684 towards Hawes. Approximately 1 mile after the village of Swinnithwaite, take the B6160 to the left signposted to Kettlewell (there is a Street Head Caravan Park signpost).

Stay on this road for 2 miles until you see the caravan park on your right. If you reach the Street Head Inn (large white pub on side of road) turn around as you have just passed us; we are right next door.

Local attractions

There are plenty of places within walking distance of Street Head Caravan Park: West Burton has been described as one of the loveliest villages in England and has a well-kept village green leading to the natural waterfall of West Burton Cauldron. This flows downstream into the River Ure to reach the famous Aysgarth Falls, a favourite haunt of writer Wordsworth and painters Turner and Ruskin; the National Parks Information Centre here has guides to local walks, guided walks and activities like climbing and caving (we also recommend picnics). The area around Street Head Caravan Park has miles of signposted footpaths for dale, moor and village-to-village strolls.

Wander Wordsworth-like around Wensleydale for more well-known local attractions and dales villages: the area’s main town, Hawes, has a weekly market and a Mosaic Trail starting from the Holme bus shelter, but is probably best known for the Wensleydale Cheese Factory, favourites of that tasteful pair Wallace and Gromit.

The factory has a visitor centre, museum and viewing gallery to see cheese-making in action and there’s a shop to pick up your own produce after a thoughtful taste of all that’s on offer. The Dales Countryside Museum is in Hawes’ old railway buildings and has free entry for children with regular events and educational activities.

Also for kids, the cathedral city of Ripon at the edge of Wensleydale about 40 minutes’ drive from Street Head comes with the Lightwater Valley theme park with a farm, a falconry centre and the UK’s first Angry Birds Activity Park. Newby Hall Adventure Garden, also at Ripon, has an interactive water area, playgrounds, pedalos and a miniature railway.

Closer to home there are a couple of play areas nearby at West Witton and Carperby, both set a safe distance from the road, or take the family to be bamboozled at the pyramid, passages and tunnels of Forbidden Corner at Coverdale, a former folly which we think is best described as ‘delightfully bonkers’.

The activities available in the Yorkshire Dales National Park are too many to list, but you can take mountain bike trails, fishing, horse riding and watersports for granted; for more sedate sightseeing, there are halls at Braithwaite and Constable Burton, castles at Skipton, Bolton and Middleham, and the Cistercian abbey and medieval deer park at Fountains Abbey near Ripon.

For day trips, you’re within easy reach of the Hardraw Falls and Middleham Castle 10-11 miles away and Richmond 15 miles away; the city of York is within 50 miles and for the North Yorkshire seaside, Scarborough within 60 miles.
