Delightful location, 5 mins drive or 25 mins walk along footpaths to Pateley Bridge, and with excellent dog-friendly pub (good ale and food) less than 5 mins walk.

Pitches are level with good-quality hard-standing (no sharp stones) with well-tended grass. Most if not all have beautiful views of Nidderdale and each pitch where we were had its own water tap so could be plumbed to a caravan. Grey water needs to be collected still, but the drain for this is very close by. The pitches seem well-drained, and water from some serious rain we had didn't linger or make the site muddy.

There is a central shower block but we also had a small one for our field, consisting of two loos and one shower for each gender. It was always spotless and never, while we were there, under pressure. I hear that the ladies has a collection of complimentary toiletries as well. This is also where the CDP is, and there is also a pot-washing sink.

The site is extremely dog-friendly and some thought has gone into this. a walk up a bank leads to a huge dog field with broad, mowed walks round the perimeter, and also which wind through the long grass in the centre, in which saplings have been planted. A plethora of footpaths, many along the Nidd or its tributaries, are also dog-friendly (including that to Pateley Bridge).

Our arrival was welcomed by friendly staff, who let us straight on to our pitch and get things underway before popping along and letting us know where things all were. We didn't see anyone much after that, but then we had all we needed - we did see people working around the site and I'm sure they'd have helped with any issues we had.

The site was very peaceful while we were there midweek, which suited us down to the ground; I would expect this to be the case at any time. We didn't see any playground, so I would think those looking for a lively experience would be better elsewhere.

There is a small shop, but I understand this is open only at weekends.

    Disliked:

Wi-fi is available but expensive at a fiver for 2 days. But there is strong 4G reception which will suit most people (we streamed music without any difficulty), and we also had a phone signal.

When we arrived reception was closed so was a bit lost to where we should go. Fortunately a young man came and pointed us in the right direction. I think they could at least be open when people were arriving.

The owners made us feel very welcome. the site was small around 23 pitches but were very spacious with electric & water available at all pitches. We found the site to be very quiet during our weekend stay. There is an excellent dog walking fields which lead down to the road and a short walk to the local pup & around 25 minute walk into Pately Bridge. The toilet/shower amenities were very clean, the only slight niggle that we would foresee is the one shower in each of the female/male facilities. We will definitely return & would highly recommend this site.

Local attractions

Pateley Bridge is where the Nidderdale Way starts and ends. There are walking, cycling and horse riding trails along its 53-mile stretch, you can also lead a llama through the Dales by contacting the local company. In the town of Pateley Bridge you'll find England’s oldest sweet shop but also the Nidderdale Museum in the old workhouse.

As it’s Yorkshire, there are historical highlights aplenty: Ripley Castle and its "Capability Brown"- landscaped gardens, the twelfth century Augustinian Bolton Abbey with nature trails winding through Strid Wood where you can find the hunting lodge of Barden Tower; there's also the dungeon depths of medieval Skipton Castle to explore and that's just to name a few. The stately homes of Newby Hall and Harewood House both have extensive gardens to wander as well as the usual ornate interiors. You can absolutely not miss Yorkshire’s first World Heritage Site, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, one of the biggest abbey ruins in England, 500 deer roam in the splendid medieval deer park.

The Yorkshire is also an area with no shortage of gorges, caves and geological features. There’s also the 80ft-deep How Stean Gorge with its roaring waterfalls and Tom Taylor’s Cave; the gorge itself can be explored via the network of footbridges and paths. Malham Cove and Tarn takes in a huge limestone cliff, the Gordale Scar gorge and the Malham Tarn nature reserve – there are several other nature reserves around too such as Gouthwaite Reservoir and Roundhill Reservoir.

For a well-deserved rest and pick-me-up, head to Harrogate to sup some spa waters and mash a tea at Betty’s Tea Rooms. Leeds and York are also both within driving distance for shopping, seeing the sights and taking in a show.

Must see
