General

  • Quiet and family-run working hill farm in the Washburn Valley
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed

The land around North Yorkshire's Breaks Fold Farm is so stunningly scenic that it's often used by directors from the small screen: Emmerdale and DCI Banks have both been filmed in this lush locale in the spectacular Washburn Valley (and the local River Washburn lies within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

If you're coming to these comely parts for hikes, the farm is close to all levels of them at the Yorkshire Dales National Park; for old old structures, famed Yorkshire highlights like Fountains Abbey and Pateley Bridge are easily reached, and for towns and cities, pubs and shopping, Harrogate, Skipton and Leeds are all well placed to get to from here: as friendly owner Richard says, there are absolutely loads of things to do within a 20-minute drive.

A quiet and family-run hill farm, Breaks Fold overlooks Thruscross Reservoir and has easy access to the cycling and fishing of the valley as well as more hikes around the woods and the water. It's a simple but clean and well-maintained site, with toilets and free hot showers as well as the facilities for ice pack freezing and gadget charging.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: you can buy firepits, logs and marshmallows from Richard and the team when you arrive for a reasonable extra charge.

Dogs are welcome on site but on leads only, please.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is a quiet site: if you wish to stay up partying this is not the right site for you.

The site was on a working farm but you couldn't tell.the field was well looked after,a slight slope towards the boundary edge were we pitched but was unable to tell.the pitch size was basically whatever site your tent is.the owners wasn't checked the size you had brought with you which was great and you find your own location. Right next to the field was a thick wooded area which was filled with wildlife and also had a woodland walk attached which led down to a massive lake. There was 2 sheds on site, one was a small shop with basic essentials and more.the other shed had a vending machine with some sweets, cereal, sun cream, hot chocolate etc
Brilliant idea. The showers, toilet and washing up areas were kept spotless at all times and smelled fresh. The staff was very friendly and helpful and even drive down to each pitch on a evening and offer a fire pit and logs and also do a check every few hours to ensure everyone is safe and fire as not left unattended. Will defo be going back again

Midgies were out in force biting for England which was expected with the weather we have had recently

Space and tranquility. Most of all though, the friendliness of the owners and other family members of staff. Me and my three girls 6, 9 and 9 (and nephew aged 4) loved it here. Not once did they use their iPads. The park was great and even felt comfortable allowing them the freedom to venture to the reservoir. The kids loved the fire pit toasting marshmallows and I loved keeping the fire going while they explored, ventured and made friends.

    Disliked:

I was very lucky to arrive when I did and not have to pitch on the slight slope. Having said that, I didn’t venture to the overflow field so unable to comment.

Friendly, quiet site. Loved the shed with the fridges and freezer for customer use and the small shop which sold all the essentials including milk at a very reasonable price.
Never had to que for the toilets or showers, both clean but water in the shower did run a little cold sometimes.
Friendly chicken visited the tent for breakfast.
Great space for kids to play safely.
Lovely walk down to the resevoir.
Fire pits and marshmallows were a good touch.

    Disliked:

Not that many flat places to pitch the tent, but as this was clearly stated in the Pitchup info this wasn't really an issue as we knew what we were booking. Lots of midges due to warm damp weather so take fly spray.

Family friendly site centrally placed to explore the stunning scenary of Nidderdale. Not overcrowded. Very good and clean toilets and showers. Very friendly and obliging owners have added some good extras such as fire pits with fuel and lighters, small shop for essentials and treats not overpriced either. Use of fridge freezer. Only advice is beware of midges.

Very central for destinations as we set off in the morning and went to many different place, which were all very nice.
    Showers and toilets very clean
    Washing facilities clean
Could hire fire pit and get wood which was a good idea, despite us taking our own but the option was there if needed.
We have a large large but had plenty of space between other campers which was great as you weren't too near each other you all had your own space.
    Owners very nice.

    Disliked:

My only dislike was the sloping field which obviously can't be helped but had to balance/level the cooker stand and put pieces of wood under our table to stop things sliding off, but suppose there were other parts on field that weren't as sloping. Not major problem.

Local attractions

As the Breaks Fold Farm team points out, this is lovely land with loads to do all around, whether you want to ditch the car for a time and take to countryside, dale and valley walks, or drive a short distance for some of North Yorkshire's most topping attractions. Recommended by the team nearby from the countless options on offer are Pateley Bridge, Grassington, Skipton, Ilkley, Ripon, Harrogate, Thirsk, York, Appletreewick, Burnsall, Timble and Fewston, along with the scenic walking and cycling starting straight from the site and the geocaching, horse riding and paragliding nearby.
