General

  • Quiet and family-run working farm in the Washburn Valley
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed

The land around North Yorkshire's Breaks Fold Farm is so stunningly scenic that it's often used by directors from the small screen: Emmerdale and DCI Banks have both been filmed in this lush locale in the spectacular Washburn Valley (and the local River Washburn lies within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

If you're coming to these comely parts for hikes, the farm is close to all levels of them at the Yorkshire Dales National Park; for old old structures, famed Yorkshire highlights like Fountains Abbey and Pateley Bridge are easily reached, and for towns and cities, pubs and shopping, Harrogate, Skipton and Leeds are all well placed to get to from here: as friendly owner Richard says, there are absolutely loads of things to do within a 20-minute drive.

A quiet and family-run farm, Breaks Fold overlooks Thruscross Reservoir and has easy access to the cycling and fishing of the valley as well as more hikes around the woods and the water. It's a simple but clean and well-maintained site, with toilets and free hot showers as well as the facilities for ice pack freezing and gadget charging.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed: you can buy firepits, logs and marshmallows – from Richard and the team when you arrive for a reasonable extra charge.

Dogs are welcome on site but on leads only, please.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

This is a quiet site: if you wish to stay up partying this is not the right site for you.

Oh wow what a lovely friendly site! This was our first ever camping trip and what a way to start! Great field, clean toilets and showers, and lovely owners that made you feel really welcome. The fire basket hire was a brilliant touch with logs, firelighters and marshmallows that could be bought on site.
The boys and I loved our stay and having realised that there is so much more for us to see in Yorkshire we will definitely be back!
We spent 2 days going into York to see the sights there. The journey was not bad at all and the park and ride on the A59 is brilliant.

    Sloping field
Only two showers so big queue in morning
    LOTS of flies!!!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
We do advertise as a 'hill farm' so the clue is kind of in the title, and we are in Yorkshire, hilly by nature. The overflow area is leveller. We find that people just pitch to suit their surroundings. We have not got marked pitches as we think it detracts from what we are trying to do and we think it generally works well giving people a freedom of choice.
Our shower facilities are meant to be able to facilitate 80 pitches - which of course we would never do, we just can't understand why everybody on site wants to to shower on a morning.... This year we have spent a lot of time and money upgrading to what we have (4 ladies toilets, 3 gents plus urinals, 2 ladies showers and 2 gents showers), which is more than double what we have had previously and is ample for the site.
Flies, midges... Are a part of camping, and they are present on pretty much every site. We do have a midge machine to try and help, but you are next to a large area of woodland and reservoir.
We feel we are one of the best value for money sites and are the cheapest in the area - we don't charge extra for showers, fridges, hairdryers etc. We do have masses of rubbish to dispose of, insurance, constant cleaning of the facilities, maintenance of field, walls, fences, toilets and showers to upkeep, lots of late nights supervising things and keeping everything in check and doing it any cheaper would mean we wouldn't be able to keep everything to the standard it is at. We charge per person which is the fairest way to do it.
I'm also very disappointed you haven't rated us higher for customer service. We will bend over backwards to help you and try to be as approachable as possible. We really wish people would have the decency to come and speak to us face to face instead of getting behind the computer to voice a negativity.

Lovely location but no phone signal which caused some problems. Make sure you bring enough provisions as there is no shop for miles! The owners were very helpful and we loved the fire pit we hired. Good clean toilet facilities and washing up area. Take insect repellent, loads of midgies, we all came home covered in bites. Would stay again because we liked the quiet site and the way it was run.

what a lovely little working farm... pleasant & friendly farmer who came round the pitches on a number of occasions during each day to ask if everything was ok.
very clean & tidy area, with male & female shower & toilet blocks which are cleaned daily. bins for waste disposal, a fridge & freezer for everyone to use. also a small play frame with swings & a slide for little ones.
farmer supplies a fire pit & bag of logs which can last 2 nights for £10, also marshmallows & sticks for toasting for £1.
easy access to skipton, harrogate & surrounding villages by car.
beautiful walks around a yorkshire water reservoir & surrounding area.
most follow the 10pm to 8am quiet time, but there was the odd group that contravened this rule. but nothing major.
post code, if travelling by satnav, plots you about 1 mile away if coming in from the A59 from harrogate. just keep going till you come to a cross roads. the farm is on the right turn.
if travelling from skipton, when you hit the cross roads, the farm is directly in front of you.
we will definitely be booking again to visit this idyllic little camp site.
    thank you

Recommended by the team nearby from the countless options on offer are Pateley Bridge, Grassington, Skipton, Ilkley, Ripon, Harrogate, Thirsk, York, Appletreewick, Burnsall, Timble and Fewston, along with the scenic walking and cycling starting straight from the site and the geocaching, horse riding and paragliding nearby.
