Foxhill Park: Peaceful rural site

General

  • Peaceful rural site 20 minutes' drive from York
  • Half an hour's drive from North York Moors National Park
  • Easy access from A64 and close to bus stops for day trips

City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Foxhill Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64.

From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’.

Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies.

No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: wifi access, a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

Just returned from a fabulous six night stay here. We were in our campervan and stayed on a grass pitch as we like these and like being near tent campers. Lovely owners made us very welcome and provided information about the best way to get to York (Park and Ride), lent us a book about York which was very helpful and checked we hadn't forgotten anything we needed as we were settling in. The owner said he had a ton of stuff if we needed to borrow anything which was a lovely gesture. The toilets were always spotlessly clean as were the showers and the showers were lovely and hot. We bought a couple of bits from the shop and prices were reasonable. It is a lovely site and very well cared for, ideal for a rest and we combined days on the site with a couple of days in York so came back feeling really refreshed. As numbers are limited at York attractions (York Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre, Castle Museum tours) it is best to book asap because there was no availability for people turning up on the day or for later in the week for them. Highly recommend this great site

    Disliked:

Only a couple of small things - it was 20p for the hairdryer but in these Covid times I can't remember the last time I saw a 20p! I think an extra little bit on the price of the holiday would be easier and the hairdryer be free of charge? Also on our last couple of nights large groups, who were perfectly pleasant and children beautifully behaved, let their dogs be off the lead the whole time. The dogs were well trained but when other campers are eating outside their tent and have small children it is not completely safe and is against the rules. Unsurprisingly the dogs do not pick up their poo and none of the adults appeared to either sadly. I saw a dog foul on an unoccupied pitch and it was left there. I think a warning notice on the field that people will be required to leave if their dog is off a lead is necessary, it shouldn't have to be but a small minority ignore a polite request (and I say that as someone who loves dogs and have two)

We went into york for the day and a taxi in was £20 flat rate which between 4 people is great! Location is fantastic, staff wonderful, pitches flat. Such a reasonable price for a 2 night pitch with electric hook up. We will be back!!

Local attractions

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom.

For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types.

Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.

Must see

  • Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • The Arboretum - Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
