  • Well-kept adults-only site with far-reaching valley views
  • A 15-minute drive from the North Pennines or Durham city centre
  • Direct access to the Lanchester Valley Railway Path; a mile from a pub
All aboard, ladies and gentlemen – it's time to make tracks for Forrest Valley View, a small-scale site right on the edge of the Lanchester Valley Railway Path. This spacious County Durham spot is something of a nature hub, with woodland, a peaceful stream and a wildlife-friendly pond to explore at your leisure. As its name suggests, there are also far-reaching vistas to admire here, with picnic benches on hand where you can serve up a meal as you sit back and survey it all (perhaps, given this is an adults-only spot, with a bottle of bubbly to hand). As well as the railway path, more adventurous treks are to be had close by in the North Pennines (15 minutes’ drive). It's an easy journey into central Durham, too, if you fancy city jaunts. This is a back-to-basics site, so you'll need to be fairly self-sufficient as there is no electricity, shower or toilet available. Alfresco cooks can set up barbecues, though: drive 15 minutes down the road to a farm shop for supplies or check out the shops in the village. Hot food can be often sorted by the site staff; you can also pick up welcome boxes full of food or get free-range eggs for your brekkie. Fancy treating yourself to a meal out? A highly-regarded local pub is about a mile away from site and there are a couple of restaurants in Lanchester.

Local attractions

What to do in Durham (15 minutes' drive), you ask? It's a toss-up between the cathedral, Crook Hall, Durham Castle and the city's brilliant bunch of museums and ancient university buildings. If you prefer to learn about the past in the open air, you may prefer Beamish Living Museum (20 minutes), where you can sample some of the sights, sounds and smells that would have been common around these parts at the height of industrialisation in the early 20th century. More chilled times are up for grabs at Pow Hill Country Park (20 minutes), Derwent River Fisheries (15 minutes) and Saint John's Chapel (30 minutes), a gorgeous moorland village where all sorts of trails and paths converge. Whether you're all about your sport or are on the look-out for some retail therapy, Geordie jaunts of all flavours are to be had in the vibrant city of Newcastle (35 minutes). You could also call in at Barnard Castle (40 minutes), an attractive market town named after the fortress founded there by Bernard de Balliol in the 12th century.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Booked as wanted a safe stop while visiting friends and many of the boondocking spots had very questionable reviews.

Disliked: £25 is a bit steep for no facilities. For this reason I wouldn’t book again, as there’s many sites even with facilities in other locations that charge £15 or less.

As long as you come prepared this is better than any roadside pitch.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Peace, solitude, privacy there was only one other camper there.

Disliked: No hook up, limited bin availability. Although hard stand it was not designed for the purpose. Waste disposal? Water? Downhill on a track might not suit some bigger motorhomes or caravan combos. Cost for no amenities.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The peace and quiet, adults only, the level pitch, the welcome, the wild flowers, the view, the size of the pitch, my request for a particular type of pitch being granted, the weather ;).

Disliked: Not an actual dislike but the website entry whilst very clearly stating there were no toilet and shower facilities, which was fine by me as I have my own, it doesn’t indicate whether there is a cold tap or not, so I had to contact the owner to find out. There was and it would have been helpful to have easily known that from the website entry.
