  • Back to basics family-friendly stays on a working sheep farm
  • Beaches, castles, manor houses and shopping within half an hour
  • An hour from rambling Yorkshire's Moors, Dales and the North Pennines
Moonwalk your way to thriller hols at Billy Jeans Campsite, a welcoming site on a working sheep farm five minutes’ drive from the village of Fishburn in the north-eastern county of Durham – and don’t forget your walking boots either… This is a prime spot for lengthy rambling explores: start by following the routes around Escomb lake 30 minutes away, then wander further for strolls at Hamsterley Forest and tramping around the North York Moors National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, all within about an hour of the site. If you prefer to use your legs for more wheely pursuits, stick around Hamsterley Forest for stunningly scenic mountain biking trails (rent a bike at Hamsterley if you don’t have your own). All of this should leave you pleasantly tired, not to mention craving some eats, so head back to site to get dinner grilling on the barbecue (supplies from Sedgefield, 10 minutes away) or have a night out with pub or restaurant eats in one of the nearby villages.

Local attractions

If your tastes skew more coastal than hilly, you’re in luck round here: venture seaward for beach days at Crimdon or Seaham (within half an hour's drive), with sandy strolls and explores of half-buried World War II bunkers all available. History buffs keen for more than that will have plenty else to keep them busy, from museums to castles to stately piles all around. Start way back when with a trip around the ruins of Binchester Roman Fort, then come closer to present day at the former strongholds of Barnard and Raby castles. For something more high society, try Moulton Hall, Crook Hall (and maze), Ormesby Hall and the ancestral home of the US’s first president George Washington at Washington Old Hall. Anyone who thinks history's all about dusty corridors must take a trip to the Beamish open air museum, which tells the tale of life in the north east during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s, or time a stay to be around for Bishop Auckland’s Kynren, an open-air show covering two thousand years of north-eastern history. For urban days, the sights, sounds and shops of Durham, Darlington and Middlesbrough are all less than half an hour from base.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views

Disliked: Limited facilities, overgrown grass, no rubbish bins

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review. I'm pleased you like the views. It is a 'basic' campsite so there are no facilities except the necessary toilets. It is advertised as such. Apologies for the overgrown grass, more time will be dedicated to grass maintenance in the future, as has been done previous years. There are no bins on site to reduce wasps, flies and vermin. Your rubbish is collected twice a day and taken to the designated skip away from the campsite.

Great little site, friendly staff.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Perfect for a night away camping with family, quiet site with a lovely big field for children to run around in. We had a great time making up games and fun runs, taking life back to basics.

Disliked: Fire pit hire/logs quite expensive compared to other sites we've stayed at.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. To be honest, we done make very much money from the fire pits and logs. They are all to buy in in the first place and more of a service than anything. Other site perhaps sell wood which is free to them.

Not suitable for kids and young families, disappointed second visit

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: As usual loved the location, owners were lovely and enjoyed the fire pit!

Disliked: Did not enjoy my daughter getting chased in the pitch black on her way back from the toilet by a labrador (the owner told me this campsite has a dogs on a lead policy) to the point she was inconsolable Did not enjoy the owner of the dog swearing at me infront of my children and making them cry by shouting at me Did not enjoy the same people telling me to leave the campsite as I was not welcome to be there (infront of my children) at 11pm at night. You can imagine how scared they were after hearing that shouted at their parent in the middle of the night so I also did not enjoy packing a 4 man tent up in the dark on my own and driving my kids home in the middle of the night. This is my second time at this campsite and the experience was vastly different from the first. I would like to reiterate this was not a problem with the campsite however the couple who shouted at me did mention they come every weekend so I would not recommend this campsite for children. But by all means, bring your dogs! As I was very rudely told by the owner of the dog don't bring your kids to this campsite.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Oh dear. In any circumstance such as this, you need to ring me there and then, even in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, there is little I can do about it afterwards. Just because a camper says they come every week, doesn't mean the do. Dog are allowed, but must be on leads at ALL time. This will be very strictly monitored throughout the 2023 season.

Would expect better facilities for price

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Gorgeous view and good spot on the hill under the trees. Owner was very nice and even found us a deck of cards. Clean water tap in field.

Disliked: Toilets were 3 porta cabins which was fine but they weren't overly clean (dirty toilet paper on floor). No sinks, just the tap on the field meaning you had to brush teeth in middle of campsite.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. The porta loos are usually checked and cleaned twice a day. This coming season, 2023, I'll ensure they are checked more frequently. I'd be devastated if one was found to have no loo roll for example. I'm always pleased to see tooth brushing at the tap - better than not at all.

Basic camping with good atmosphere. Kids enjoyed themselves. Friendly

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Spacious clean facilities

Disliked: flies

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review. And if only I could control the flies...... ....and the wasps, sun, rain, noisy children (admittedly tolerable if they're happy), husbands (admittedly tolerable if they're obedient).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: It was quiet

Disliked: The road leading up to it is in bad condition

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review. The farm road maintenance is like the 'Forth Bridge', a lot of money, time and effort goes into it every year and as soon as pot holes are fixed at one end, more appear at the other end. I will do my best to keep it flatter this season.
