General

  • Peaceful farm with pond and walking paths
  • Farm shop, gift shop, café and furniture for sale
  • Loo and shower blocks with disabled access

Keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre near Co Durham's Barnards Castle... if dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will.

The farm also has its eighteenth century Peel House, home to a gift shop, a café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch, a farm shop selling fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and – rather unusual but very fab – a reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables.

Facilities include loo and shower blocks with disabled access; fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Loved that we did not have far to go for our family camping trip. Kids loved the swing in the tent field would be great if could add a play area between the trees as there was a lot of children playing when we stayed.

    Disliked:

As I read about the farm online before I booked it looked like there was a climbing frame great for the kids, which ended up been in the electric pitches. The leaflet also said there was ride on tractors and trampolines which I was pleased with, more things for the children to do, but this hasn't been there since 2014 which I was told when I asked about these. Brouchers far to out of date it's now 2017!!

The site is nine miles west of Scotch Corner on the side of the A66 near Greta Bridge, ideally located for people travelling to or from Scotland or the Lake District.

From Barnard Castle

Leave the A67 / Market Place towards Kings Court. At the roundabout, take the first exit on to Newgate and proceed for one mile. Turn right towards the A66/The Street and continue for three miles. Look out for our campsite on the left.

Local attractions

Thorpe Farm Centre's location in Co Durham bordering North Yorkshire on the A66 puts it in nifty position for days out of all kinds by foot, pedal or car. If you want to investigate the surrounding area by foot, a shortcut to the A66 gives access to many more walking paths as well as cycling trails; a map is available at the site shop with details.

The seventeenth century country house of Rokeby Park is just around the corner from the farm, and it's about ten minutes' drive to Barnards Castle, an old market town with pubs, shops, restaurants, the Bowes Museum and its castle high on a rock above the River Tees.

The farm is nine miles west of Scotch Corner in the countryside of Teesdale and 15 miles from Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales. Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, High Force Waterfall (England’s highest, foam fans) and Middleton in Teesdale are also within driving distance.
