General

  • Peaceful farm with pond and walking paths
  • Farm shop, gift shop, café and furniture for sale
  • Toilet and shower blocks with disabled access

Keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre near Co. Durham's Barnards Castle... if dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will.

The farm also has its 18th-century Peel House, home to a gift shop, a café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch, a farm shop selling fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and – rather unusual but very fab – a reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables.

Facilities include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access; fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

This camp site was quite nice. They are obviously renovating and building so there is potential for it to be fantastic. We had an electric pitch near the pond/lake which was just lovely.

    Disliked:

The toilets and washroom blocks were not as good as some of the places we have been but we could see that they seem to be upgrading so maybe they will get to them soon. I think they have a way to go to make it more user friendly but otherwise it was not too bad.

The idea of a farm beside the campsite is nice. The staff in the cafe in the morning were friendly.

    Disliked:

In reality it was smelly, the toilets were dirty. The pitch was not level. The area looked like it needed a revamp.

Poor dated site with nothing good to write about 04/04/2018

    Absolutely nothing.

    Disliked:

Access roads to all areas are, to be kind, really really poor. Facilities although reasonably clean should have been refurbished 15 years ago, not acceptable today. The electric hookup kept tripping out, couldn’t even boil a kettle. We stayed over a very wet weekend and had a mud covered pitch along with every other grass pitch and then most people had to towed off.
This site screams “greedy farmer”. I would have been unhappy paying £12 per night but when you pay £40 per night I know I have been financially raped. My advice, find somewhere else to stay and give your money to a site that invests for the benefit of it’s customers.

    Lovely pitch
    Great scenery
    Loads of wildlife mooching about
    Situated on a66
Ideally located for Barnard Castle 3 miles away
The actual site is well kept plenty of plots with lots of room lovely pond area and listening to the ducks and geese waddle past our van entertained our 3 year old for hours
Lovely play area x 2 for the kids
We didn't visit the animal centre or the wetland area but it did look nice
Not sure the reclamation barn was open due to it being winter.
    Staff are lovely
Looks like they have spent a lot of money building a new building which staff told me would be a new shop, gift shop cafe and is opening Easter.
We enjoyed our time here visiting Mainsgill farm where the lambing season was in full flow and then too high force which was a lovely walk out about 10 miles away.
The pitches were muddy but this is to be expected in winter with cars driving over grass and churning it all up
    Pitches are level

    Disliked:

The shower block could do with some attention, they were clean and showers were hot but in general they were a bit tatty. However it would not atop me from staying here again
There was also a toilet block right next to where our van was parked however this was locked and we had no access to it.

Local attractions

Thorpe Farm Centre's location in Co. Durham bordering North Yorkshire on the A66 puts it in nifty position for days out of all kinds by foot, pedal or car. If you want to investigate the surrounding area by foot, a shortcut to the A66 gives access to many more walking paths as well as cycling trails; a map is available at the site shop with details.

The seventeenth century country house of Rokeby Park is just around the corner from the farm, and it's about ten minutes' drive to Barnards Castle, an old market town with pubs, shops, restaurants, the Bowes Museum and its castle high on a rock above the River Tees.

The farm is nine miles west of Scotch Corner in the countryside of Teesdale and 15 miles from Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales. Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, High Force Waterfall (England’s highest, foam fans) and Middleton in Teesdale are also within driving distance.
