  • Characterful glamping site in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Saltburn-on-Sea; Whitby 20 minutes
  • Family-oriented six-acre site with easy access from the A171
It's hard to know which is the more compelling reason to book a stay at North Shire – the excellent North Yorkshire location or the gorgeous accommodation… Suffice to say, the combination of both makes this a real winner of a place for a getaway with your family or just your other half. Let’s start with the location – because this site is up in the northern reaches of the North York Moors National Park, which means fabulous natural landscapes all around, and about 15 minutes' drive from the coast for seaside days. It’s also only a little way off the A171, so journeys in and out should be fairly easy. Head along this road to the east and you’ll get to Whitby in about 20 minutes – so you'll be able to enjoy all the attractions of the seaside town by day and then retreat to a lovely peaceful rural space in the evening, And what a rural space it is – the property stretches over six acres, which you'll share with the peacocks and free-range chickens that live here. The accommodation units all have their own individual style and list of inclusions, but each one has been carefully designed and packed full of character for a truly memorable place to stay.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Great location, very quiet and clean!

Disliked: It did feel like the touring site was a bit of an after thought to the wedding venue in that there wasn't an obvious reception or out of hours contact, so one van that turned up late pitched less than 5m away from ours even when the site was completely empty.

Local attractions

Being in the North York Moors National Park means you’ll no doubt want to get out for a walk, whether that’s a gentle stroll to a country pub or a more challenging climb up Ingleby Incline (35 minutes’ drive). Goathland (25 minutes) is another lovely place to take a walk – those of a certain age will recognise the village as the setting for TV’s Heartbeat, while others will be familiar with the station from the Harry Potter films. You can ride the heritage trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from here, or walk to Mallyan Spout waterfall. Over at the coast, a trip to Whitby (20 minutes) is a must-do, for the 199 Steps, the gothic abbey and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum as well as the beach. Saltburn-by-the-Sea (15 minutes) and Robin Hood's Bay (half an hour) are both well worth a visit too, for traditional village style and sweeping sandy beaches.
