Local knowledge goes a long way when planning outdoor breaks. Lodge Farm Retreat is a case in point – these smart holiday pods are in the small village of Thwaite, which (courtesy of the site's helpful owners) you now know is pronounced 'Twyte'. (Place names in Suffolk are trickier than most – who would've guessed that the nearby village of Hoxne actually rhymes with 'oxen?') Pronunciation may not be simple, but life is much more straightforward at Lodge Farm Retreat, where the swish self-contained accommodation units come with their own kitchenette, bathroom, barbecue and patio. This secluded site is set deep in peaceful Suffolk countryside and about half a mile away from one of the owners' favourite pubs. It's also a couple of minutes' drive from the A140 – particularly convenient if you're heading to or from Ipswich (30 minutes' drive) or Norwich (45 minutes).

Looking to spend a few days locally? Head to Stonham Barns (15 minutes' drive) for a vintage car museum, sensory garden, adventure playground and golf course. There are also more hands-on activities here, like a popular paint-a-pot shop and bird handling opportunities at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary. Ready to venture further afield? Coastal spots like Southwold and Lowestoft are about an hour away and are home to gorgeous views, boats and beaches.
