  • Small-scale site on a peaceful Suffolk working farm
  • On the outskirts of Bredfield; 10 minutes' drive from Woodbridge
  • A few minutes' walk from a local shop, tennis courts and a playground
Take a trip to Greenlay Pastures for some rural rejuvenation in the Suffolk countryside. This peaceful working farm is in the village of Bredfield, close to the market town of Woodbridge and the river Deben estuary (both 10 minutes' drive). Greenlay Pastures is home to some fine-looking sheep and cows that graze and chill here alongside human guests. The farm's pastures and mature hedgerows are havens for native birds and animals, so keep an eye out for creatures as you tour its quiet terrain. In spring and summer, wild orchids and violets have also been known to spring up, adding a dash of colour to these green farm vistas. In terms of facilities, the site has a standpipe, toilet and washroom and a separate electric shower. With plenty of space between the pitches, the experience at Greenlay Pastures is akin to wild-style stays – turn up, pick a spot and settle down in a meadow surrounded by wildlife. Bredfield's village shop sells local produce that you can cook up on site or pack in a picnic; there's also an ace playing field with bookable tennis courts and a play area for the kids. The wider area is also easily accessible – the site's a five-minute drive from the A12, positioning you within reach of much of coastal Suffolk and Essex. The nearest full-sized supermarket is in Woodbridge (10 minutes).

Local attractions

East Anglian jaunts of all kinds can be had in the county of Suffolk. Popular seaside spots like Aldeburgh and Thorpeness (both 25 minutes' drive) have appealed to writers, musicians and other artsy folk over the years – when you get a glimpse of their coastal view it's easy to see why. Suffolk's also a major hub of historic sites, including Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) and Orford Castle (30 minutes), not forgetting splendid Sutton Hoo (15 minutes), a clutch of Anglo-Saxon burial mounds that have yielded countless treasures over the years. After something more active? There's a spacious golf club and well-maintained public swimming pool in Woodbridge (10 minutes), while if you head down to Iken (20 minutes) you can head out in canoes and kayaks along a quiet stretch of the river Alde – seals, wading birds and (harmless) jellyfish can all be spotted here. There are also two indoor climbing centres on the outskirts of Ipswich (both 25 minutes), where you can either take on the wall straight away or book in to spend an hour or so building up your confidence with a pro climbing coach.
