General

  • Woodland setting with two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Heated outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, fitness suite and bar on site
  • Seven miles from the Suffolk Heritage Coast at Aldeburgh

This isn't Merely a Suffolk holiday park – it's a Suffolk holiday park with a whole heap to do… If the two fishing lakes at Carlton Meres Country Park in Suffolk don't have you wriggling in anticipation, all manner of other options are on site to lure you in.

Free activities and entertainment are held in high season (weekends from March to October), or there's splashing in the heated outdoor pool and steaming gently in the sauna for relaxed types, and a fitness suite and tennis court for the energetic. Or might you prefer wandering peaceably around the park's splendid woodland setting and woodland walk?

The kids are sorted too – always an amicable option on holiday – with an adventure playground to keep them swinging about for hours, and the arts and crafts, karaoke, disco and outdoor activities of the kids' club which runs on weekends and during school holidays (small charge applies).

The roomy pitches at Carlton Meres are grouped in camping and touring areas, all with their own shower and loo block, waste disposal points and fresh water points. The touring shower blocks, swimming pool shower blocks and entertainment complex have all been fully refurbished in 2015.

No allocated pitch it was turn up and go where you like. Some people had moved their tent twice!
Female toilet block disgusting; a child had urinated on the floor and it wasn't cleaned up until several hours later
Large groups stayed up drinking until the early hours they were swearing and being noisy. No one told them to be quiet.

The non-electric hook up area was fab because it was secluded from the rest of the campsite.
    Staff are friendly.

    Disliked:

The facilities were very dirty and need to be monitored and cleaned more often.
The showers need a new shower curtains and trays
The electric hook up area is too crowded.
The shop should be open from about 8am as the campsite is buzzing at 8am already and it would be nice to get some milk :-)
    The rubbish bins were overflowing

My friends and I have just returned from one of most enjoyable camping trips ever.
I cannot praise this camp highly enough.
All of the staff are really friendly and helpful, special mention to Sam on reception who is a credit to this site.
The fishing lakes are really scenic, children can fish free and adults at £10 a day. The smaller lake is great for children as they can constantly hook little fish, there are also a few big ones to be caught as well.
The swimming pool was really warm and clean and the changing rooms and show blocks located next to the pool were spotless and showers great.
The shower blocks near the camping were as clean but not as modern.
There is plenty of room for those camping at the non-electric site but the electric spots look very closed in.
There isn't much around the site, the nearest village, and large supermarket, is in Saxmundham which is about a 7 minutes drive away.
This site has recently been brought out by park resorts so there is lots of building work going on around the site. I believe they are making way for lots more caravans which may ruin the peaceful atmosphere of this site.
Southwold is about 20 minutes drive away and is a lovely seaside town with a small pier and beautiful beach.
We will definitely be returning soon.

A great site with lovely facilities. The man made lakes were lovely for a walk and the fishing looked good. Pool was good, gym and clubhouse clean and comfortable. The Park Holidays entertainment was good in the evening. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere on site.

    Disliked:

We opted for a pitch with an electrical hook up. We are not experienced campers, and did not consider how noisy this would make things. Also we were pitched in with caravans, a little on top of each other. There is some work on the site taking place (summer 2017) it was not overly intrusive, but a lot of machinery moving around. This looks like it will add designated tent pitches with electric outlets. So will be improved I guess in a month or so.

When we arrived it wasn't too busy. Nice local areas to visit and a clean site to stay at. Children's entertainment is getting their but they have only just started this and it is a bit hit and miss. The entertainers are trying hard though.

    Disliked:

The building work meant we had diggers and vans travelling past all day. They did try to give the kids a wide birth but nothing was mentioned when we arrived. The young girl on reception was very dismissive about where to pitch and assumed we would know where to go, luckily the more experienced receptionist came out and pointed us in the right direction. The showers could be bigger but were clean. The swimming pool at times was very cold and my 2 year old could bare it for no more than 5min.

Local attractions

After they've whirled around on site for a while, take the kids to the coast at Aldeburgh (seven miles) or Southwold (14 miles) for days on the beach, buying freshly caught fish on the sands and enviously eyeing up the beach huts.

Walberswick's also well worth a look, to birdwatch among its heath and marshlands, catch crabs on its beach or to take the ferry across the Blyth to Southwold; you might spy some celebrity residents in this popular town too...

Both Felixstowe and Lowestoft are within 19 miles for additional Suffolk seaside trips; some time should be spent at Lowestoft for the Pleasurewood Theme Park too – and from there one can move onto the seaside at Great Yarmouth and the rest of the Norfolk coast or the Suffolk and Norfolk Broads.

Closer to home, take a trip to fab Framlington Castle five miles away – where Mary Tudor was proclaimed queen, fact fans – and to Orford Castle ten miles from camp, both managed by English Heritage and both rather spectacular.

See also, for wildlife-loving sprogs, the 2,000+ residents at Norfolk's Banham Zoo, and walking among the parrots, mammals and reptiles of African safari park Africa Alive! at Kessingland, a colourful day out sure to have them squawking.

Must see

  • Framlingham Castle (5.0 miles)
