General

  • Kessingland site directly on the Suffolk coast
  • Three different pitching up areas over 28 acres
  • Two new amenities blocks, including disabled and family rooms

What a beach! And what a view… The gorgeous East Anglian coastline and an expanse of Suffolk sands sweep out for miles from The Hollies touring and camping park near Lowestoft: the site is set on a cliff and the views from your pitch or your firepit of an evening will be Hollie-wood worthy.

It's Kessingland Beach below you at The Hollies, which is a highly scenic ten or 15-minute saunter along the clifftop path and an equally scenic scene on arrival with its miles of golden sand. And the beach is dog-friendly all year round, as is The Hollies – hurrah and woof.

The amiable Hollies team has arranged three picks of pitches on its roomy 28-acre site: the Barley field for tourers and with electric hook-up; the Seaside field for tents and without electric; and the Hay field especially suitable for mixed groups with a mix of tent and touring pitches, all with electric.

Amenities are newly built and include two large shower and loo blocks with family rooms and rooms for disabled guests; a newly built playground is on site too for Suffolk coast-based little squirts.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The location was really good- beach particular lovely.

Campsite was quiet, spacious and well kept.

shower blocks were clean with many showers and toilets meaning hot water and no queues the entire stay

the coffee bus was great- hot drinks and hot food and good prices

we would love to stay again

    Disliked:

we disliked nothing but if a few areas we could improve-

    - no hair dyer in the shower block- hair dryer or plug sockets would be great
    - details on bus time tables or any pub/restaurants in walking distance.

    Almost everything
Really close to a large and good beach
    Dog friendly
    Really friendly and helpful staff
Wasn't too crowded when we visited
    Toilet/shower block never too busy
Showers are hot and stay on for good length of time
Little coffee shop on site (though didn't use it)
Close to Southwold (another beach / sandier beach)
    Good size pitches
We really enjoyed the visit, thank you.

    Disliked:

Hard to find anything we really disliked as we really enjoyed our stay.

Play area could be better - the wooden slide isn't that appropriate (I checked for splinters but couldn't find any, but I still wouldn't want my 18 month old sliding down, which is a shame as he loves slides!!) and the wooden structure in general could be safer, ensuring all screws, even if out the way, are in tighter / not sticking out.

The hard surface in the touring pitch isn't the best for an 18 month old to stand/crawl/fall on as some bits are sharp. A shingle type or softer stone would be nicer. Quite a few bright lights around the toilet / pitches at night... great to see where you're going, but less great when star gazing or watching for shooting stars.

These things are being picky though as we loved our stay, it's a great site and can't wait to visit again, it's just how we'd make it even better for a 10/10 score :)

We loved the layout of the site, very easy and nowhere was far from the shower/toilet block. The showers were always clean and the block heated. The best bit was the direct access to the beach, much less hassle than getting everyone into the car and plenty of space on the beach. The play area kept our two entertained.

The staff were so friendly and welcoming that we felt like we had known people for years. We've never stayed at a campsite whose facilities were cleaner and more well-stocked. Also, the map doesn't do them justice: the wonderful, sandy beach was literally less than 80 metres from our pitch! Friendly, considerate campers stayed near us and made our stay even better when we had a chat. Would not hesitate to stay again!

The park was very clean and easy to find a space for the tent. Site staff were very friendly and explained everything too us well. Felt very welcomed. All facilities on site were clean and work fully. Didn't feel over crowded. As I had a young child who liked to run around, I was not worried as the space around the tent was grasses and big enough for them to play.

Really good fields, didn't flood on the heavy down pour in August. Bins were changed regularly and the toilets and showers were good too. Shame about some people disrespecting them. Clean up after your selves shows your a decent human beings and dog owners. (Good job cleaners, I take my hat off to you) 90 steps down to the beautiful beach, by golly it was great going down but coming up is a fun challenge.

Their was a natural made swimming pool in the sand just to the right of the steps.... don't be fooled it is quiet deep as my son found out and had a Dawn French moment (jumping in puddle) as a 7 year old. Also spotted seals bobbing in the sea too.

My boys said it would be great if their was a bigger climbing frame in the park as well as a metal slide, as slide that is standing is wooden and my 10 year old was worried about getting splinters in his butt. But he really enjoyed the tyre obstacle course, and going into the bus cafe for a slushy.

Their are Toilets and Showers in each field so really good on that aspect. Really good site I will most defiantly be back with my family, good price too.

Their is also a building from the war close by, so be careful as it is right in the cliff edge and could give way. but its great to know and see.

    Disliked:

That their was no hair dryer in the toilets in the sea view field.

Could have had laundrette on sight as children have accidents. (maybe I didn't look in the right places if their was one)

Could have lamps at the top of the stairs middle and bottom of the stairs to show where the stairs are to get down on to the beach and to avoid accidents.

Local attractions

The Hollies is in a spiffing location to get to the best of Suffolk, Norfolk, the countryside and the Broads for a bit of whatever you fancy in boating, fishing, hiking, rainy day activities and family days out.

Lowestoft, Southwold and Great Yarmouth are all within ten miles – Lowestoft is only about five minutes by car – and are all well worth a day trip each, as is lovely Norwich about an hour's drive to the north-west (services run regularly from Lowestoft Station too).

Lowestoft has two theatres and a handful of small museums in Sparrow Park alongside the main Lowestoft Museum in Nicholas Everett Park; head to the library's local history section for more pics and info of days of yore.

Lowestoft's lighthouse is probably its most well-known feature, but take time for a trip to Ness Point too, the most easterly location in the UK (just ask a Lowestoft local to point you towards Gulliver).

If you're on hol with the kids, you'll find loads of family-friendly options in the area, like the Africa Alive animal park five minutes' drive from the Hollies (go here on a Sunday for a bonzer of a car boot sale) and the Pleasurewood Hills theme park about 20 minutes away.

Kids might also like the wooden roller disco at Lowestoft's Claremont Pier, but if this doesn't have them wheeling around in joy, take them to walk the plank at the play park Adventure Island, or to see more species at Thrigby Hall Wildlife Park just outside Great Yarmouth.

Finally, nautical sorts don't need to tie themselves in knots trying to find a craft to take care of, as fishing boats can be chartered near Kessingland for sea angling trips, and the Norfolk Broads Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is within easy reach to drift along wildlife-laden waterways.
