General

  • Old-style camping in a relaxed atmosphere
  • Close to RSPB Minsmere and in a stargazing area
  • Immaculate amenities including three family bathrooms

Like camping trips to be chilled? Prefer to do your own thing without having to look out for loads of campsite rules? Hither thee to the relaxed Haw Wood Caravan Park in Suffolk, where friendly new owners Georgina and Dan promote a seriously chilled-out atmosphere for old-style camping.

You won’t find a clubhouse, bar or noisy entertainment at Haw Wood, just roomy pitches, plenty of space for the kids to run around (including a fab new playground), and close proximity to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the county towns and villages of Aldeburgh, Southwold, Dunwich, Snape Maltings and Walberswick.

Your stay is also sorted with the site facilities, including a facilities block new in 2015, with first-class shower and toilet rooms, all with underfloor heating, along with three family bathrooms and a fully-fitted shower room with disabled access. A well-stocked shop is on site too for essentials.

The farm is popular with stargazers, nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who come for its closeness to RSPB Minsmere; there’s even a turtle dove cooing around on site – among other wildlife visitors… Children and dogs are very welcome at Haw Wood: Georgina and Dan only ask that both are supervised and cleared up after when necessary.

The caravan Park was great. We had our own little corner in one of the fields. The play park, shop, washing facilities were fantastic. The toilets were probably the best and cleanest we have seen at a caravan park. Staff were very friendly and approachable.

    Disliked:

The weather was horrendous which is no fault of the park itself. The nearest big supermarket is probably 40-45mins drive away, although the park shop and the little Co-op 5 mins walk away stock the essentials.

We enjoyed the whole experience, the owners were very helpful and always around the site if we needed to ask any questions. The showers and toilet facilities were very clean and we did'nt have to wait at any time of our stay for a shower.
Having a dog, the dog walking field was luxury for our pooch, usually they have a little spot and they have to stay on the lead, this field was contained and a great size for our dog to enjoy a proper off the lead walk. The childrens park was very good too, well eqipped, our son wanted to play there the minute he was awake to the time he had to go to bed. A great site, we have already reccommended to friends.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the weather was not as good as it could have been, we would have loved to have sat outside our tent more than once during our stay. This has no reflextion on the campsite, just typical british weather. One little niggle we did have on the Friday a family arrived with older children who were playing in the park. The dynamics changed as the older children took on an Alpha role. We took our son away from the situation before it escalated and we were going home the next day anyway. The older children did not have their parents watching them, again the site has this displayed on a board as rules in the park. Maybe a reminder to parents on arrival, if their children use the playground they must be observed or the rules passed onto their children about respecting the little ones.

Fantastic site, clean and well laid out. All facilities have been carefully thought about. Nice quiet site with good pitch sizes, we have a large 8 man tent but still had plenty of room. Staff are friendly and helpful. Will be returning next year, best site we have stayed at. Wi-Fi available near the reception/cafe.

Me and my partner stayed at this site for 2 nights and couldn't have had a warmer welcome. The staff were absolutely lovely and made us feel very settled. The camp site was extremely clean, hosting lovely toilet cubicles and hot showers. We stayed as we were going to latitude festival about 4.5 miles away - On arrival the site had given us an information sheet about getting to and from the festival and other details, which I felt was very thoughtful.

We were going to walk to the festival, however one of the staff from the site had offered to take us down for a bit of cash and save us a long walk. He got us 3/4 of the way and stopped where the traffic started which was more than fine for us, we were grateful to not have walked the whole way.

Large beautiful fields and a co-op a short walks away with food, alcohol and cash back.

If we didn't live so far away, I would definitely stay here again!

Directions

Leave the A12 at the Darsham Shop and Cafe. Continue down the lane half a mile, following the signs for Haw Wood Farm. You will find the entrance to the campsite on the right just after the white farmhouse.

Local attractions

Whatever your preference, you’ll find it on the doorstep of Haw Wood Caravan Park or within half an hour’s drive, whether it’s walking through the forest, strolling on the beach, visiting a historical building or sampling – yet again – a local Adnams ale or home-cooked pub meal.

The Adnams brewery with regular tours is at Southwold fifteen minutes away: it would be rude, after all, not to sample the local produce.

Outdoors, the wildlife to see in this area is first-class: wild deer in the local fields, a string of Dartmoor ponies in Dunwich Forest and the must-do birdwatching at the RSPB reserve at Minsmere ten minutes’ drive from Haw Wood, where there are also guided walks, safaris and nature trails for walking and cycling through woodland, heathland and reed beds (bike hire is available near the campsite if you’re not bringing your own).

The Suffolk Wildlife Trust has dozens of wildlife areas along the coast and inland, including several near Southwold, Aldeburgh and Framlingham. It also co-manages the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve between Walberswick and Southwold, where there are over 500 species of butterfly and moth fluttering about the marshes and meadows.

After sampling the Adnams, stroll around the seaside town of Southwold to see its beach huts, award-winning pier and thriving harbour. Head towards the fish and chip shop on the High Street to see the blue plaque as a homage to George Orwell whose parents’ house was in the town.

Also within fifteen minutes is Dunwich, now a tiny village but once a populous port city with a population half the size of London before most of it was lost to the sea; the free museum telling the tale of the town is open from March to October.

Fourteenth century Leiston Abbey and twelfth century Framlingham Castle are 15 to 20 minutes away, and one of the best historical highlights in the country – Anglo-Saxon burial centre Sutton Hoo – is within half an hour.

We’d also recommend just getting into the car, switching off the satnav and seeing where you end up: there are plenty of pretty villages within easy reach, or go further afield to the Norfolk coast and Great Yarmouth, and shopping in Norwich and Ipswich.

This area is one of the clearest in the UK for stargazing too; there’s an observatory at Seething twenty minutes away.
