General

  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with hairdresser and barber on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course

Back to school for your hols (gasp)? Panic not – Suffolk Academy is an entirely blackboard-free zone. In fact, this fab four-acre site is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.

Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay-as-you-go basis, and open 24 hours a day for the hardcore types. If you’d rather your workout involved being out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables. Activities are offered at additional cost and mostly suitable for adults or older kids; away from these, the site is simple, quiet and basic witth no additional facilities for kids... just plenty of space to make your own entertainment, play or relax.

Yes, it’s possible that all this activity might mess your hair up... but no, you can’t use it as an excuse to duck out, for there’s a barber and hairdresser on site to restore your barnet to a beauteous state. And it’s worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away.

Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue or a gathering at the campfire area (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed).

Please note

Facilities/activities including gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Friendly staff and wonderful setting, so peaceful. New shower block and sinks were super. Lots of clean toilets. Owners were just putting decking down - apparently only been open 3 weeks, had a lovely chat with them and they have great plans for the future.
Very clean site and really helpful staff (forgot my tent pegs) lol
Barrow is easy access to both Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket and the Weeping Willow Pub in Barrow is like Michelin Star!
I will be coming back in October with my friends

Nice big pitches, friendly greeting in arrival & looks like would have lots going on in full season. Short walk to lovely village with good pubs.

    Disliked:

Only 2 showers which wouldn’t have been a problem for our stay as our 2 pitch booking was the only ones on the site but we couldn’t get hot water or anything more than a trickle out of the showers. There was a dip in the ground outside one if the toilets & a trench which my niece twisted her ankle in when dark. No toilet roll replacement given Saturday or cleaned.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
We leave our mobile phone number with all guests and indeed you used it on your first night with us to report the problem with the showers and hot water. We had a plumber there within the hour and had a report back from him that all was now ok. We had no knowledge that the problem persisted until the end of your stay, you were the only pitches in residence at the time, so there was no one else to report it. If we had known we would either have ensured the problem was corrected and/or opened up other showering/washing up facilities for you. Likewise with the toilet rolls, should we have realised we would have topped them up without a problem. Although we do not put the responsibility onto our guests and our cleaner will be spoken to about this, a simple request would have been very welcome and solved the problem, We passed by several times in person during your stay and asked if you were ok and neither of these issues were mentioned at the time.
We have only been open a few weeks and are learning and improving all the time but we cannot rectify problems that we don't know exist.

Really good value site with large, flat pitches. We didn't use any of the numerous activities around the site (archery, gym, etc) though we did use the large assault course next door, which is paid for separately.
Short walk to a pub (which wasn't serving food on the evening we visited) and a brilliant convenience store (Matt's) which became our takeaway.
Bury St. Edmunds is close and interesting for half a day.

From the manager...

Hi Thanks for your feedback. For future info and anyone else wanting pubs there are actually two in Barrow, one of which is a first class restaurant and always serving food, although best to book. There is also a fish and chip shop just past Matts store :)

From the manager...

We appreciate you leaving us feedback. Since your visit we have improved the shower facilities ( we actually had a leak during your visit which was then rectified) , we are also adding several new showers. Also already added are three washing/washing up sinks with hot water. We understand your concern around the archery and although all safety measures are in place we will be erecting a fence. We are sorry you didn't enjoy your visit as much as you would have liked.

Thanks for leaving us a review we are glad of the feedback. Since your visit we have added 3 sinks with hot water for washing up and additional evening lighting. I think that on at least one evening the lights to the WCs were unplugged accidentally so we apologies if this affected your stay.

Site was fabulous, quietly nestled at end of country lanes. Amazing Assult Course for any age to try in next field & Archery also available with great teacher Patrick ! Toilet & shower facilities were an added bonus.

    Disliked:

No hot water available in washing-up sinks, hence we then ate out ! I would suggest adding another shower block as only one shower for each sex wasn’t enough. Vending machine for coffee wasn’t available on Monday morning as doors to Reception were locked, however a short drive to MacDonalds soon solved our immediate need.

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review we really appreciate the feedback. Since your visit we have now added 3 sinks with hot water for washing up etc. We are also about to add more showers including a family shower room and a disabled wet room. We hope to see you again :)

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape!, half an hour away by car.

If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away.

Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
