  • Luxurious bell tent glamping on a two-acre Norfolk field
  • On the edge of the village of Swannington; Norwich 25 minutes' drive
  • Furnished canvas accommodation with private washroom and cooking area
The folk at this rural site have carved out a rather inviting niche deep in the Norfolk countryside – smart bell tents, a gorgeous meadow location and under half an hour from the Broads, Norwich and the coast. The tents at Hengrave Meadow Glamping are set far apart from each other for extra privacy. The typical interior set-up here includes a wood-framed double bed, a comfy mattress, matting, rugs, chairs and fresh linen. After all – just because you've opted for a wild-style stay, there's no reason to compromise on comfort… Outside, each unit has its own under-cover canvas cooking area with a picnic bench, camping gas cooker and plenty of kitchen utensils. Each bell tent also comes with a private toilet and shower a short walk away in a newly fitted-out shepherds hut. Finally, there's a common area with a washing-up tap, electricity points for phone charging, a fridge and books that you're welcome to borrow on quiet evenings in. If the owners have any spare free-range eggs they'll leave them here for you to use in your dinner. The village of Swannington is a quiet spot, with not much in the way of shops or places to get food (although there is a garden centre). Reepham (10 minutes' drive) will be your best bet if you fancy a local pub (there are several in the town), while nearby Norwich (25 minutes) has a host of high-flying restaurants, cafés and bars to tempt your tastebuds.

Liked: Duncan, the owner of hengrave meadows glamping, couldn’t have been more accommodating and was always on site or a text message away if we needed anything. Everything from the teepee, the communal area and the toilets all felt clean, organised and well equipped. We made use of the free to rent bikes on site, and thought these were a special touch to our stay in the countryside. Thanks Duncan for a relaxing and enjoyable stay at hengrave meadows.

Bell tent

Liked: Absolutely gorgeous site.. very picturesque! Each pitch has lots of space around it, and everything you could think of is catered for. Very thoughtfully laid out, from your own covered personal kitchen/cooking/eating area to a well stocked communal kitchen/pot wash area. Facilities all very clean, fresh crisp bed linen and especially liked the private shower/toilet facilities which is real luxury when camping. Thank you Duncan for your hospitality and friendliness we will definitely come back and look forward to our next visit!

Bell tent

Liked: The location is fantastic. Tucked out of the way so you can completely switch off and unwind. The tent, outdoor kitchen and shared facilities were fantastic. Thoughtful extras provided, well equipped, comfortable and clean. The location was also ideal as it is only a short journey to the coast as well as being close to Norwich and local towns, with plenty to do in all weathers.

Disliked: Very close to giving the stay 5 stars but slightly short of full marks as we had poor signal in the area, no internet connection and as there is no way of heating the tent so we did find it got very cold in there at bedtime, with it being only early summer at the moment. Not the sites fault, the digital switch off was enjoyed and there was power in the shared kitchen for charging phones, games and making a warm cup of tea. We will definitely be returning and will remember to bring some extra books and a hot water bottle for the evening next time!

Local attractions

Itching to explore some of East Anglia? Chuck some boots, poles and sun cream in the boot if you fancy car-free strolls on Marriott's Way (five minutes' drive), a scenic 26-mile path that follows two disused railway lines. Pottering about in the Broads (25 minutes) is another popular option, and coastal walks starting at Cromer or Sheringham are half an hour away by road. Two top-rated National Trust properties are close by if you fancy genteel ambles around historic grounds: Blickling Hall (20 minutes) is a rather spectacular 17th-century mansion with ornate painted ceilings, while Felbrigg Hall (30 minutes) has lavish interiors, lakes and woodlands to meander through. All that is lovely – but what about when you've got young kids to entertain? Child-pleasing outings for budding palaeontologists are up for grabs at Roarr Dinosaur Adventure (10 minutes), and Banham Zoo (50 minutes) is worth the drive for enthusiastic natural historians. On top of that, Norwich (25 minutes) has bowling alleys, cinemas, some excellent swimming pools and live entertainment for almost all tastes.
