Unusual things to do around Wells-next-the-Sea

Ride the rails

Miniature railways don’t come bigger than this… in fact, the four-mile track length of the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway makes it the longest 260mm-gauge railway in the world. Board the train at Wells station (just south of the town) and it’ll take you about half an hour to ride to Walsingham to see the abbey and the ruins of the medieval priory.

See the harbour horse

Have a look out towards the salt marshes when you’re at Wells-next-the-Sea harbour and you may spot an unusual animal… The Lifeboat Horse is a stunning three-metre-tall sculpture made from metal and old whisky barrels, and it’s best viewed when the water recedes at low tide. The sculpture was originally intended to be part of a temporary sculpture trail but locals loved it so much they crowdfunded a campaign to have it returned to the sandbank permanently.

Experience Thursford

About 20 minutes’ drive from Wells-next-the-Sea is the incredible Thursford Collection, where George Cushing has gathered all sorts of steam engines, fairground rides and other machinery including Europe’s fourth-largest Wurlitzer organ. It’s a fascinating place for a tour at any time of year, but if you’re around in November or December, see if you can pick up tickets for its legendary Christmas Spectacular – an all-singing, all-dancing festive spectacle that attracts thousands of guests every year.
