  • Eco-friendly and relaxed Norfolk farm near Aylsham
  • Handmade shepherd's hut with spectacular views
  • Double bed with linen, woodburning stove and outside barbecue
If it’s high time for a digital detox, retreat to the secluded setting of Shepherd's Hut at North Farm Cottages, surrounded by rural fields 10 minutes’ drive from Aylsham. The handmade electricity-free wooden hut is insulated with lambs’ wool to keep it cosy, and mounted on sturdy cast iron wheels from the local foundry. It’s flits between a couple of homes on site – in the summer months it’s housed on a secluded water meadow overlooking a stream, and between October and Easter it retreats nearer the farmhouse to keep tootsies dry, but still with pretty countryside views. Inside, there’s a double bed with linen provided, chairs, table, woodburning stove and stove-top kettle. You’re in for a warm welcome – the owners provide an essentials box of tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and cooking oil to get you started, as well as the first basket of wood for the stove (additional baskets are available for a small charge). Head outside for a lungful of fresh air and pull up a chair by the firepit to keep things toasty – it doubles up as a barbecue, so that’s alfresco eats covered too (barbecue tools are provided). A kitchen area and bathroom are available for exclusive use of the hut in a converted outbuilding on the edge of the meadow. The kitchen area has a small fridge, a sink, a microwave, a single hob and an electric kettle, along with basic crockery and cutlery, while the bathroom has a basin, WC and an excellent shower. When it’s time to stretch your legs, join the Bure Valley Path by walking across the fields to Oxnead (keep your eyes peeled for wildlife while you wander). Anglers can also stay put and try their luck in the small tributary of the River Bure, which runs through the property.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: A simple and expertly built shepherd's hut provided the perfect three-day break from screens and society. The bright stars at night were a highlight, which I enjoyed as I walked up and down the small field around the hut. The lovely wood burner kept me toasty warm, and it was only a short walk to the shower, toilet and kitchen area. The single hot plate was all I needed to prepare one-person meals over the three days. I walked to Burgh one day and Oxnead the next, also finding time to wend along the river Wensum. A lovely stay, with considerate hosts.

Disliked: As Gill kindly prepared me for, this is very luxurious camping! Which means the walk to the toilet, and having a shower, is out in the cold — and can be quite chilly. It's all part of the experience.

Route directions

Having left the village of Burgh, you will drive through open countryside and over a small crossroads. As the road bends sharply to the right, on the right you will see the North Farm sign and a lane that leads to the farm (if you come to a little bridge, you have gone too far). Turn right down the farm track (passing Kingsbridge house on your right) and continue down the track.

Local attractions

Take in a couple of impressive buildings with visits to Blickling Estate (10-minute drive) and Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (20 minutes), then continue with pretty garden explores at East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden (20 minutes) and Plantation Garden (half an hour). For history with a bit more engine power, take trips to the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum (20 minutes) and the City of Norwich Aviation Museum (20 minutes). A day at Wroxham Barns (15 minutes) should come with something for everyone – the leisure and shopping complex has boutiques, craft studios, a kids' farm, funfair and restaurant. What’s a Norfolk hol without exploring the Broads? Opt for land or water adventures at Salhouse Broad (25 minutes), where there are woodland walks to cover, canoes and kayaks to hire, and play areas to blow off steam. Then, of course, there’s Norfolk’s county town, Norwich (half an hour), for a bit of city life – think shops, eateries, a market, cathedral, museums and art galleries.
