What's up, buttercup? Life stifling your growth? Things not going smoothly? We have an idea: escape to the country to Buttercup Meadows Camping in rural Norfolk, a small family-run site with just a handful of grassy pitches to hide away in. You can even pretend to be completely off the grid: the site is non-electric and while there’s battery charging at the Buttercup Meadows farm, the boss won’t know that.
Amenities include Miranda, not the tall comedian but a shepherd’s hut with loo and shower facilities, and there are several water taps around the site for easy filling up of your kettle. Campfires are allowed, so you can snooze late and wait for someone else to fire things up, get the kettle on and wake you with a steaming cuppa.
Once you’re in bloom again and ready to explore the area, the Norfolk coastline and Norfolk Broads are less than an hour away. There’s cycle hire on site and loads of Norfolk attractions nearby including the nearby shops and cafés of Dereham and a zoo less than twelve miles away: perfect for any little petals on your trip...
Within an hour of Buttercup Meadows you’ll find enough Norfolk highlights to keep you busy for weeks whatever your tastes: the seaside resorts of the coast, the boats of the Broads and inland attractions including walking and bike trails, villages, gardens, stately homes and adventure parks.
Start off in Dereham for a spot of lunch and then a trip on the heritage Mid-Norfolk Railway, running through Dereham to the Yare and Tiffey valleys to finish up at Wymondham. From here you can head east to Norwich for shopping, sightseeing and picking up some Colman’s mustard, and then north for another railway trip on the 18 miles of the Bure Valley Railway.
Heading coastwards, have a day or two at Great Yarmouth for its Pleasure Beach, circus, Sea Life Centre and trying your luck at the racecourse; trying the world-famous chips is also a must to start off a seaside food tasting trail. Just outside Great Yarmouth there’s Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens with all sorts of creatures great and small, or you could head south to Suffolk’s Southwold for its sandy beach and award-winning pier.
Great Yarmouth is the gateway town to the Norfolk Broads for another few days’ worth of outings: boat trips are run from four locations in the Broads by the Broads Authority and your own vessel can be hired from centres at Wroxham, Potter Heigham and Horning for sightseeing and fishing. If you prefer to stay on land, there are several good golf courses on the Broads including at Great Yarmouth, Reedham, Beccles and Norwich. Still got money left? There’s another racecourse at Fakenham about 13 miles from Dereham.
Options for little bloomers abound from Buttercup Meadows: the wildlife and walking trails at award-winning Pensthorpe Nature Reserve and Gardens in the Wensum Valley; the farm and adventure playground at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, or getting up and close with the big beasties at Lenwade’s Dinosaur Adventure Park.
