General

How wood you like to stay at an award-winning forest park with walks through sheltered tree groves, a sun patio to bask on, plenty of play areas for the youngsters and hilltop viewpoints taking in sandy beach, the Norfolk coastline and the famous golf course at Royal Cromer? Yew wood? Then take the family tree to Forest Park Caravan Site, a pristinely pretty park set among 100 acres of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There’s loads to do on site alongside the woodland walks and gaping at the views, such as plenty of grassy space for ball games and outrunning the older folk, an indoor pool, bike trails and a games room with up-to-date toys, table tennis and a pool table.

Forest Park is a mile from the seaside town of Cromer where crabs have always been the cuisine du jour, but there’s plenty of fare dished up at the park too, with a clubhouse restaurant serving everything from snacks to Sunday roasts all at reasonable prices – and a takeaway as well if you’d rather find your own secluded spot to snack. The well-stocked park shop sells toys, camping equipment, newspapers and gifts as well as a good selection of groceries, and there are freshly baked croissants, bread and pastries on offer too: just follow your nose.

Location is okay. Reception staff and shop staff lovely.

    Facilities passable.

    Disliked:

On arrival had a very difficult encounter with a member of staff driving a van. No idea what he did there, or indeed who he was, but in the pouring rain he stopped to tell us (with very little clarity) that we had set up in the wrong way on our (very small pitch). No information regarding "correct" set up was given at reception, and the guy was rude and frankly unhelpful - he suggested we set up a different time when it wasn't raining! When I explained that his "correct" set up would place us right in the pitch adjacent, he told us that wasn't used - it was frankly painful, cold and wet!

The toilet block nearest us was then closed apparently due to a "fault" that reception couldn't explain further than it wouldn't be fixed before we were due to leave.

Pitch was tiny and pretty much on the access road. We took the financial hit, left early and went to a site we had been to a few days before. No wifi access at the pitch (which was fine for us, but worth being aware of).

The site itself is lovely, the size of the pitches are amazing and I don't think I'll ever see this kind of space anywhere else. The park is lovely and clean, the swimming pool is adequate and the bar facilities are lovely too, their is a well stocked shop which is more than reasonably priced. We had a 7 day break and decided this year to stay on a different site to where we usually stay in Cromer.

    Disliked:

We were fortunate enough to have a relatively flat pitch but had I have had a pitch on a slope I could only forsee a nightmare stay. The toilet facilities were clean and tidy however the shower facilities were awful, the dirt I saw was appalling, it was dirt built up over time not recent. There was never any hot water. I gave feedback to the site that if they wish to keep their reputation they really do need to invest, I didn't hear one good comment about the shower facilities. Whilst wifi is not a priority when on holiday I think it is only fair it is not advertised as having wifi as we could never get it. Whilst we had a lovely holiday again in Cromer I shall not be returning back to Forrest Park and nor would I recommend it to anyone due the appealing washing facilities on site.

The site itself is lovely in terms of the woodland setting and the easy access to both Overstrand and Cromer beaches.

The restaurant, swimming pool and children's play areas are all great in principle but didn't really live up to the descriptions on the website in that the advertised opening times of the pool weren't the same as the reality and you have to pay an additional fee each time you use it. The choice of music for the kids disco was rather questionable and there wasn't a kid's club as advertised on the website.

    Disliked:

Cold showers! It didn't seem to matter when I got there, the showers were cold or, at best tepid.

Toilet/shower block being closed between 6-7 am. This made things very difficult with little ones who woke up early and needed to go to the toilet.

Total lack of WiFi. We always book sites which advertise wifi access as we use it to check weather forecasts, plan days out etc. . The website advertises WiFi access across the entire site but when we read the leaflet we were given on arrival it said it was only available in 3 specific locations. It wasn't we couldn't get access anywhere on the site and even the staff were complaining about how bad the internet access was.

Noise late at night. We endured loud music, screaming/singing children and shouting/swearing adults from first thing in the morning until past midnight on a number of occasions. When I reported it to reception I was told to ring the emergency number. I do feel that wardens need to patrol the site in the evenings and make sure that people are being considerate.

There generally seemed to be a real discrepancy between what was advertised and the reality onsite so we were rather disappointed.

Directions

From Norwich
Follow Cromer road from Aylsham until you arrive at the T-junction signposted Cromer (left) and North Walsham (right). Turn left and follow the road until a turn off to the right appears signposted Northrepps Village and a brown caravan sign. Turn right and then immediately left, and within fifty yards follow the road under the railway bridge until you reach a T-junction. Turn left and Forest Park will be on the right.

From Kings Lynn
Go through Cromer town centre (past the large church on your left) and when you reach the traffic lights, turn left signposted Mundesley. Follow this road (Overstrand road) until you pass the country club on your left; you will reach a right-hand fork with a horse trough. Take the right-hand road (Northtrepps road) at this fork. Forest Park is at the top of the hill on the left.

Local attractions

You can see the village of Overstrand from Forest Park, where there’s a large sandy beach below the village’s clifftop location; from here walk the mile and a half into Cromer with its funfair, zoo, theatre, two museums and that famous Cromer crab to buy in the town or catch your own off the pier. If you’re angling for other fishy treats, try fishing for bass off the pier or taking a boat out to sea to land some cod.

Two long-distance walking routes finish in Cromer: the Norfolk Coast Path which runs 45 miles from here to Hunstanton and the Weavers’ Way, a 56-mile route going to Great Yarmouth. For shorter strolls, there are the miles of the Norfolk Coast AONB to explore, with easy access routes for buggies and wheelchairs, or to see the sights in style take the award-winning Coasthopper bus from Cromer to King’s Lynn. Wildlife including seabirds and seals can be spotted from many places along the coast, with seal-spotting boat trips available from Morston and Blakeney.

The kids should enjoy a whirl around the skateboard park at Mundesley and watching Dad fall off, Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens at Great Yarmouth, the Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park at neighbouring Lowestoft and the Dinosaur Adventure Park at Norwich. The award-winning adventure park BeWILDerwood at Norfolk has treehouses, zip wires and critters called boggles to goggle at.

Grown-up activity in the area includes exploring Norfolk’s many history and heritage sites: make like Her Maj with a visit to the royal retreat of Sandringham, roam around the rhododendrons at Sheringham Park or get lost wandering around the Holkham Hall estate with beaches, nature reserve, woodland play area and outdoor theatre. Prefer to ramble? There are three acclaimed gardens within eight miles of Forest Park: Felbrigg Hall, Mannington Gardens and Blickling Hall.

Day trippers can boat on the Broads or take in Norfolk seaside and market towns such as Great Yarmouth with its pleasure beach, Sheringham with its weekly market and Poppy Line Steam Railway or the art galleries and shops of Holt.

Norwich has old architecture, several theatres and a must-see heritage cathedral; it’s also one of the top ten shopping cities in the UK and has one of the biggest outdoor markets in England. Shoppers and youngsters alike can get lost in Hoveton’s Wroxham Barns, home of shops, funfair and junior farm.
