Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with just a small number pitches and a camping pod in a secluded two-acre garden.
We spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: pitches will be for your eyes only as they’re carefully spaced to give campers privacy, and local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over six years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares.
The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a ‘pig cam’ for guests to spy what goes on, as well as cameras tuned to the site TV service showing the bird table and nest boxes placed around the garden. Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some locally provided bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop.
Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an on-site microbrewery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide in. Some of the pitches are equipped with electric hook-up and water, and all campers have access to the modern shower and loo block with three washrooms and the kitchen with laundry facilities.
Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles from The Secret Garden Touring Park and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to start off at (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999).
Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from World War I up to the conflicts of the Falklands and Iraq. The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Prefer to gently soak your troubles away? Bubble away at the local Hudson Leisure Centre’s swimming pool, steam room and sauna.
Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15 – 20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; the RSPB reserve has free entry, a visitor centre and ten viewing hides, and the WWT at Welney has guided walks and nocturnal viewings among its regular activities. Or take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore.
Flowers, sausages and local produce at spiffing farmers’ markets can be picked up at Spalding, to the north-west of The Secret Garden and with many a nursery and plant centre nearby, water taxis along the river and shopping at Springfields and the Festival Gardens. Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.

From the manager...
It is disappointing for us that your recent experience at The Secret Garden did not meet with your expectations as we do work very hard to provide a great camping experience for all our visitors.

You can now make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children on Pitchup.com.
Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
Use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together when booking multiple pitches: the campsite or park will try to grant your request.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.
