General

  • Secluded setting in a carefully managed wildlife haven
  • Bushcraft classes in fire lighting, shelter building and more
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale

Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden.

You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares.

The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a ‘pig cam’ for guests to spy what goes on, as well as cameras tuned to the site TV service showing the bird table and nest boxes placed around the garden.

Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some locally provided bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop.

Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an onsite microbrewery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide in. All guests have access to the modern shower and toilet block with three washrooms and the kitchen with laundry facilities.

Perfect camping location which provides well designed pitches laid out around beautiful mature gardens. The central shower and toilet facilities are excellent with additional porta-loos scattered around the site.

Owners are welcoming and helpful and the shop has the basics you need plus some nice additions such as beer, gin and coffee!

Saturday afternoon sausage and beer tasting is an excellent opportunity to meet the other campers and the owners of the site whilst tasting some local produce.

Definitely one of the best campsites I've visited.

Very friendly staff who were eager to help. The site was pretty much full yet it never felt too busy. There was a lot of space between pitches so it felt quit private. The toilet blocks were clean and warm. The piggies were cute.

Pod was lovely and cosy. Site is well planned and good facilities. Planting is lovely. Good outdoor play for children. Big fire pits very useful and plenty of wood to collect on site.

    Disliked:

Bed not very comfortable. Advise to bring extra stuff to put over the thin mattress.
Also upset the owner arriving at 9.30pm. had phoned ahead to warn of late arrival and web site states arrival any time. Was quite rude on phone when we called again to say had arrived. Had travelled a long way after school on a Friday and a long week.

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles from The Secret Garden Touring Park and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to start off at (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999).

Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from World War I up to the conflicts of the Falklands and Iraq.

The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Prefer to gently soak your troubles away? Bubble away at the local Hudson Leisure Centre’s swimming pool, steam room and sauna.

Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; the RSPB reserve has free entry, a visitor centre and ten viewing hides, and the WWT at Welney has guided walks and nocturnal viewings among its regular activities. Or take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore.

Flowers, sausages and local produce at spiffing farmers’ markets can be picked up at Spalding, to the north-west of The Secret Garden and with many a nursery and plant centre nearby, water taxis along the river and shopping at Springfields and the Festival Gardens.

Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.

Must see

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (14.6 miles)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (16.4 miles)
  • Ely Cathedral (18.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Peckover House and Garden (1.4 miles)
  • St George's Guildhall (13.2 miles)
