Crystal Lakes Caravan Park: Well-kept grounds

General

  • Dog-friendly Cambridgeshire site with 12 acres of meadowland and lakes
  • A 25-minute drive from Cambridge and 35 minutes to Ely; access to A14
  • Carp and coarse fishing lakes; restaurant, shop and kids' centre

What will you reel in first? With carp and coarse fishing on site, and the surrounding Cambridgeshire countryside, it could be a big catch or a haul of memorabilia… or photos of otters and swans at local nature reserves or all the family in front of a mighty cathedral. Set over 12 acres of meadowland and with two small mature fishing lakes on site, Crystal Lakes Caravan Park is a secluded family-friendly and dog-friendly site that's still within reach of a couple of urban areas: it's 10 minutes’ drive from Huntingdon and 25 minutes from Cambridge, with easy access to the A14.

Eggs sunny side up or burgers by the bun? Find whichever option gets your tummy rumbling 10 minutes’ walk away in Fenstanton village centre, which has a butcher, two general stores, bakery and newsagent. There are also shops selling fresh garden produce and free-range eggs, an excellent fish and chip shop and four village pubs all serving local grub.

If you need to work up an appetite for all that food, hit the nearby cycle paths or public footpaths (there are over 600 miles of public footpaths around, as well as the RSPB reserve at Fen Drayton Lakes).

Facilities back at base include a laundry area, plus spacious toilets, showers and hand basins, all supplied with free hot and cold water. Kids can play games, run about on the recreation field or sign up for various antics at the activity centre on site (entry charge applies as this is run by a different company).

And of course fishing will surely keep you busy… there’s a small daily charge for that, with carp, tench, pike, bream and others to hook out of the two lakes.

We visited here 10 years ago and enjoyed it but this has changed a lot in 10 years this is my opinion due to the fishing I believe the fishing has changed owners and doesn’t have the same warm welcome you would of got when the site warden would come visit round the lake. The Friendly warden on site was still welcoming. The lake made out they was doing me a deal as I was camping by charging me £8 although this is nearly twice the amount stated on the webpage and it only stated £7 on the signage around the lake, if visiting please avoid the fishing here.
However the camping pitches are clean and tidy and I recommend a visit the shower block hasn’t changed in the last 10 years and could do with a revamp.

On arrival we were met by a gentleman who said he didn’t have our booking, I showed him the confirmation, but he was still not sure, he called a lady who told us they didn’t have our booking, so I showed her the confirmation. She said it was okay as they didn’t have anyone else staying and asked us where we wanted to put our motorhome. Just looking at the site there were an awful lot of caravans that had clearly been there for some considerable time and looked very lived in, there was also a section that looked like it was used by contractors when working away from home. The toilets/ showers are not good. I walked in and saw a row of urinals with no door, I quickly left thinking I was in the wrong place, I sent my husband in the second time and he said they were shared facilities, they were to a very poor standard. We were booked for 3 nights but we left after 1.

The people running the camp were very pleasant and friendly.

    Disliked:

The camp itself, has a secondary camp on site housing farm workers, there was no mention of this when booking. Where they were housed was messy, unkempt and housed dirty old caravans. The old, needing updating shower lock was also shared by them, again not mentioned. The little fishing lake was overrun with weed, and there were several old caravans scattered around the camp. The toilet block also had raw sewage coming out of a drain outside which did not smell very good. Next to the camp is a field where a music festival of some kind will be on this weekend, and the organisers and workers also have a campsite. It is a very bizarre setup in general.

Local attractions

Martini or tonic? Pick your poison at the Roundwood Distillery (20 minutes’ drive), where gin is the speciality. Beforehand, line your stomach with goodies sourced from the local market town, Huntington (10 minutes).

Welcome to cathedral city… Ely (half an hour) is known as much for its rosy-cheeked gin as it is for its sky-high cathedral and stained glass museum. The cities are pretty imposing here, as Cambridge (25 minutes) is full of learning… master the art of punting on the river Cam or eye up modern art at the museums.

Switch modern artefacts for jumbo jets at Britain’s largest aviation museum, Imperial War Museum Duxford (25 minutes). Then, bring things back down to earth at Houghton Mill (15 minutes), a National Trust site with tea rooms, canoeing and cycling at the final remaining mill on the river Ouse.

Less for canoeing and more for wildlife spotting, RSPB Fen Drayton Lakes (10 minutes) harbours more waterways, frequented by otters, geese, ducks and swans.

Must see

  • Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial (8.1 miles)
  • Kings College Chapel (10.7 miles)
  • Scudamore's Punting Company (10.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Houghton Mill (2.7 miles)
  • Wimpole Hall (11.5 miles)
