General

  • Peaceful adults-only riverside park just outside Littleport
  • 15 minutes' drive from Ely and 45 minutes from Cambridge
  • Fishing on the Great Ouse river from the site's riverbank

Cor – what a waterside view. And all served up with a big dollop of peace and quiet, as Riverside Caravan and Camping Park is an adults-only site (sorry kids, sometimes the grownups just need a bit of their own space).

Being on the banks of the Great Ouse river gives guests easy access to waterside walks, including long ones all the way into Ely (two hours or so) and shorter stumbles to the nearest riverside pub (10 minutes). The wide, calm river is also an excellent place to launch a canoe, and has plenty of fishing spots in which to try your luck with the perch, pike, carp and roach that lurk in the waters (permits are available on site for a small extra fee).

Kids there may not be but you’re welcome to bring well-behaved dogs on a lead, as long as they’re not likely to harass the chickens that roam freely around the site (and provide eggs that you can buy for your brekkie). There’s plenty of space along the river for the pups to run gleefully free.

No noisy ents and activities here to distract from the peaceful vibe, but plenty of useful bits and bobs to make life easy: electrical hookups, free hot showers and a wifi connection. Nearby Littleport has all sorts of amenities too, including a train station, supermarket, butcher, baker and the all-important chippie.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

    A lovely location.

    Disliked:

We booked a pitch next to a member of our family but it had been double booked. We were told the motor home was leaving at 14.00 hours so we squeeze in between waiting for them to leave but they were booked in until the next day. They had building works creating new piches going on for two days. They were told to stop working after many complaints. Started works at seven in the morning for about ten hours. A large cement mixer was going in and out. We couldn't believe how many motor homes caravans and tents that were allowed on the site. To say it was crowded is an understatement. There were two showers for the ladies and two for the men. There must have been at least a hundred people. We were so close together we could see into the tent next to us which was squeezed between our motor home and the motor home next to us. The site was in a lovely location but we would not go back there after our experience over the bank holiday

From the manager...

A most sincere apology to all who had been affected by the works and over booking on the May bank holiday weekend 2018.
I have been made aware that the essential work that was being carried out on the park had over run by two days. However, the level of disruption was unacceptable and noted by the park owner.
I have been appointed as the park manager, commencing on the 1st June 2018.
The previous manager being dismissed with immediate effect due to the neglect of his managerial duties.
Riverside is now the welcoming, peaceful, relaxing & lovely place that it was destined to be, with efficiant and helpfull staff, helping to create an ambient atmosphere for the comfort of our campers.
Regards.
Dave.

I phoned the day before requesting to arrive at 12 noon instead of 2.00 p.m. and was told that this was not problem.

    Disliked:

My confirmation was for a grass and gravel pitch. However, when we arrived we had to park on the roadway adjacent an empty static caravan as the grass was waterlogged (not their fault), but on walking round the site, there are no gravel pitches for touring caravans on site whatsoever.
I would not have booked this site for April had I known they did not have gravel pitches.

Good site for Ely by train or no7 bus.
    Good for fishing.
    Clean toilets block.
    Hot water.

    Disliked:

    Not the most pleasant experience.
Maybe if there was no building work and the grass was not waterlogged.
Loss of electric. During the day.
We were parked on their internal road about 8 feet from a long term resident caravan. Behind us about 10 feet another motor home parked, to our back another 8 feet another caravan was parked.
No gray water drive on drain for motor homes.
Lots of permernant caravans are parked here.
Maybe they should not be taking bookings when the site is not properly functional.
    Manager Keith very talkative NOT.
    WiFi charge.

Manager very chatty NOT. Work be carried out at the moment. We had no electricity for many hours on Monday. Mostly a static caravan site. Motorhomes and caravans pitches very close to each other. No drive over drain for waste water. Charge for WiFi.

We found this site peaceful and simple. The location was good for visiting Ely, by foot or train. Only £2 one way and leaves every hour. About a 15 minute walk to the station. There are trains going through the night, but didn't really notice the noise. Toilets, showers, chem waste, water tap & hook up.
The weather was atrocious and very wet, but got put on a hard standing.

    Disliked:

Booked through pitch up and it would seem we slipped through the net, and the guy was not expecting us. This was over an Easter weekend, but found a slot for us. Extra £2 a day for leccy!

Local attractions

This is a fab place if you love a bit of a walk – start out with a riverside walk direct from the site, safe in the knowledge that, however far you roam, there’s a pint of real ale and some tasty food waiting at the Swan on the River pub just a few minutes from base.

Elsewhere nearby, there are more trails to follow at the WWT Welney wetland centre, 10 minutes’ drive away, or Thetford Forest Park, half an hour away. For a blast of sea air, you can reach the north Norfolk coast in 45 minutes or so.

Take a trip into Ely (15 minutes’ drive) to visit the cathedral, with its 14th-century octagonal tower, and wander round the stained glass museum. There are boat trips and canoe hire to be had here too if you’d like to take to the waterways, or you could head to Cambridge (45 minutes) to try out your punting skills.
