General

  • Small friendly glamping site on a farm in rural Worcestershire
  • 15 minutes' drive from the market towns of Bromyard and Tenbury Wells
  • Barbecues, firepits and a fully-equipped kitchen provided

Firepit? Check. Barbecue? Check. Heaps of space for the nippers/dogs/recently-released-from-the-office grownups to run around? Check. Yup, Wolferlow Wigwams has got pretty much all you need for a classic family camping experience.

Minus, of course, one major factor: the bit where you attempt to wrestle the tent into some form of suitable structure and realise you’ve left the pegs at home (d’oh). None of that here – sleeping quarters in the sturdy wooden wigwams are pretty much ready to go, so all you need do is claim a spot by chucking down your duvet/pillows/sleeping bag and get stuck in to the more fun bits (maybe even come armed with marshmallows already on a stick if you're serious about squeezing every drop out of your downtime).

This is a super spot for a rural break – just 15 minutes or so in the car from Bromyard and Tenbury Wells for shops, pubs and the like and yet with a proper middle-of-nowhere vibe. Stroll a little way from your wigwam for some fably scenic views over the Worcestershire countryside and beyond to the Welsh Borders and the Malvern Hills (clouds permitting, of course). By night, the lack of light pollution means, with luck, you should be in for a bit of stargazing action as you sizzle your sausages.

But what will become of your alfresco idyll should the weather threaten to put a dampener on proceedings? Well, the clever owners have previously noted that it does occasionally rain around these parts, and thus provided you with a rather fine set of indoor facilities. A mere stroll away (or quick dash if it’s a tad damp) is a sizeable fully-equipped kitchen (with handy fridges for stashing your foodstuffs whatever the weather) and a common room with plenty of dining space, comfy chairs and free wifi access. From there it’s another short hop to the toilet block and its modern showers and loos.

You needn’t worry about getting too chilly by night, either – each wigwam is insulated and has its own firepit and barbecue, along with an electric heater to keep you toasty indoors. Those of you who can’t face the day until strengthened with a cuppa will be chuffed to note the presence of a kettle, fridge and toaster so you can treat yourself to tea and toast all cosied up in bed or communing with nature out in the fresh air.

Local attractions

You’ll get the impression that you’re miles from anything when you settle in here, but in fact you’ve picked a splendidly strategic location for all sorts of activities and visits. Active outdoorsy types might fancy taking the five-mile walk up to the Tally Ho Inn, one of the owners’ fave walks due to its lovely quiet route along bridleways (and possibly also because of the potential for a scenic pint at the far end). Ask on site for details of this and other walks, either around the local paths or in one of the many countryside parks around here (Mortimer Forest and Bromyard Downs among them).

Other fresh-air frolics nearby include swinging your clubs at the local golf course (five minutes’ drive), saddling up for horseback treks from the riding centre (10 minutes’ drive), casting a rod into the waters of Cob House Fisheries (20 minutes’ drive) or flying through the air on the Go Ape! course in Wyre Forest, 25 minutes away. A little further afield, there are a couple of great go-karting circuits about 45 minutes’ drive away and canoe trips on the River Wye from Hereford, also about 45 minutes away.

It’s not all about charging around breathlessly though – those seeking somewhat calmer times may like to visit the medieval manor house at Brockhampton Estate or the rather spectacular ruins of the Italianate Witley Court; both are around 15 minutes from the farm. If you’ve got kids in tow, the West Midlands Safari Park makes a great family day out, as does a steam-powered trip on the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster; it should only take about half an hour to reach either of these.
