Wassell Grove Camping and Caravanning: Peaceful match pool

General

  • Peaceful site set over 20 acres 10 minutes' drive from Stourbridge
  • Half an hour from the West Midland Safari Park and Cadbury World
  • Family- and dog-friendly site with three large fishing lakes

Rods at the ready, folks – Wassell Grove Camping and Caravanning is rather more than a mere place to lay your head for the night… this 20-acre site also happens to be one of the West Midlands’ finer choices for a spot of fishing.

Not one, not two but a generous three lakes await your bait here, with carp (often in excess of a hefty 10lb), bream and roach among the critters you may hook from the waters. Eager anglers should find plenty to keep them happy here, but there are also areas suitable for beginners… perhaps it’s time to start instructing the nippers in the fine art of fishing?

And if you fancy staying here but have pretty much zero interest in fishing? That’s completely fine: non-rod-wielders are equally welcome to stay here and enjoy the peaceful woodland surrounds, perhaps using the place as a base for some lovely local hikes or family days out (Cadbury World and West Midland Safari Park, both less than half an hour away, would be good places to start on that front).

Eats can be had throughout the day at the site’s own café (with both hot and cold dishes on the menu) or you can get the coals stoked on your barbecue; supermarkets are 10 minutes away in Stourbridge for supplies. Hagley, a few minutes’ drive from the site, has a couple of pubs for pints and meals out.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Facilities/activities including Fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Everything was lovely. The lady at the reception/cafe was very polite and the facilities were very clean. There was a good mix of tents/caravans and the campers there were respectful. Great experience! Highly recommended.

    Disliked:

The road is a little tricky to navigate, too narrow and steep at places. The toilets block was at the bottom of the hill (reception).

    1. A guest approached us to ask if we would turn off our mobile phones and the children's devices, neither of which were being used as we were setting up camp. She had tinnitus. We respected this and spoke with the guest ensuring once the children were settled around 9pm we would ensure she was not disturbed. Then she revisited using her phone asking for the children who where playing Barbies to be quiet.

    2. No fires allowed. This is not stated on pitch up neither on the website. I took a 11 year old and 4 year old. Lots of wood for evenings around fire, for cooking also, to arrive and be unprepared for the New No fire rule. Had to leave site find nearest tesco fortunately they had disposable bbq cheap, £2.50, bought one. I started cooking at 9pm by the time we had arrived, set up, left to go tesco and was actually ready. cooked dinner on it, unfortunely only enough charcoal to cook a small amount, I broke small sticks off the wood I had taken and sloted them through the 50mm gaps to keep food cooking.. it took 1.5 hours to cook 4 burgers and 8 sausages because of the size. The site staff came to check what I was using because of wood, the kind man saw it was a tiny bbq. I even had to "borrow" a basket from tesco to turn upside down to keep bbq off the ground (one of the sites fair rules). He greeted us, inspected the bbq and wished us a lovely evening. This was round 9.30 / 10pm. Later on the children settled down, myself and my friend used the remaining light from the bbq to enjoy the view and have a chat. Then 11.40 pm another member of staff came over and said its clearly a fire, it was against site rules and we was to put it out immediately, she was rude and said we was causing disturbance with the smoke. There was no active flames just a small amount of twigs sizzling, no heat just for a bit of light. On top of this there is nothing for children. The field is tiny for the amount of guests permitted to stay. The site is nice if you have 1. GAS. 2. NO CHILDREN. Fishing was OK. Good price for fishing. Not much to catch. 11lb max, few barbel.

Local attractions

Want to stretch your legs (perhaps after sitting by the lake for a lengthy period of time)? The friendly folk on site can point you towards the best places locally for a long walk or a short stroll: a perennial fave around these parts is the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve – once you’ve seen it from ground level you can take a gander from on high by screaming along the ziplines at the Go Ape adventure park.

If you like your outings to make you feel a bit clever, take in a bit of local history with visits to Hagley Hall (five minutes’ drive), the rock houses at Kinver Edge or the Black Country Living Museum (25 minutes). Each one aims to bring its own slice of history to life, so tour all three for an excellent insight into how people lived in the past.

Learn about the natural world instead at the West Midland Safari Park (25 minutes away): there are walk-through and drive-through animal exhibits here, along with animatronic dinosaurs and theme park rides for when it’s time to take a break. Sweet-toothed guests also mustn’t miss out on a trip to the chocolate-themed extravaganza that is Cadbury World (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Dudley Zoological Gardens (4.8 miles)
  • Black Country Living Museum (5.4 miles)
  • Barber Institute of Fine Arts (7.3 miles)

  • Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses (6.0 miles)
