General

  • Peaceful family-run park two miles from Stratford-upon-Avon
  • Shop, off-licence, free hot showers and spotless facilities
  • Regular bus service from right outside the site

Settle yourselves down here, Shakespeare fans: Dodwell Park is just two miles from Shakespeare’s birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s cottage and all the bardly attractions of Stratford-upon-Avon.

There’s peace, there’s quiet, there’s a countryside setting – and if all that still isn’t enough for a final attempt to get the kids (and dog) reading sonnets, you can culture-ise them by taking them along to nearby Warwick Castle for all sorts of horrible history. Sorted.

Dodwell Park is a small family-run site where the amenities are kept to spotless standards, with free hot showers, dishwashing facilities and hairdryers to keep the barnet looking tip-top; a shop and off-licence is on site and armfuls of leaflets at the information stand with info on Stratford-upon-Avon and other local tourist attractions.

Nearby you’ll find Cotswold villages with Shakespearely thatched inns, walks and cruises along the River Avon and the hills of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Boating, fishing and old buildings are at Luddington village about three miles from Dodwell Park.

Leaving the car behind to avoid hiking up car parking costs in Stratford? A regular bus service stops right outside the site.

The pitch was perfect size, we chose hard standing due to the recent rains and it was brilliant. The facilities were clean and well kept. Staff were extremely helpful.

    Disliked:

The shop was only open for an hour in the morning however a member of staff was near the office so opened for us quickly.

Closeness to Stratford only approx 2 miles outside of town.
Clean well maintained grounds and toilets/shower block.
    Polite staff at check in.

    Disliked:

    No scenery
    Unlevel pitch
No gated entry so did not feel very safe, also did not see any wardens checking the area.
Traffic noise from busy road both day and night
Limited shop opening times between 1 and a half to 2 hours a day only.
Abundence of no entry, residents only, no dogs walkers allowed, and private road signs in the area- made me feel like I was walking on egg shells.
    Pitches too close together.
Not very dog friendly- we weren't allowed to walk the dog around the site, instead we had to take her to a near by field. No dog bowl of water left outside the shop, no dog rings to secure dog outside toilets etc. No bins provided for dog waste.

Local attractions

To Stratford-upon-Avon first: see what the big deal is by catching a Royal Shakespeare Company play before a trip around town to the Shakespeare attractions; buy a Shakespeare Five House Pass to see Hall's Croft, Mary Arden's Farm, Nash's House and New Place and Shakespeare's Grave alongside Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.

Stratford also has a butterfly farm with Europe’s biggest butterfly exhibition, Stratford Racecourse and evenings at Cox’s Yard for live music and more theatre.

Many companies offer cruises along the Avon, but to really save pennies take a trip on the old chain ferry for 20p, which will cruise you across the river for a walk to the butterfly farm, or stay on land and take the mile and a quarter route along the Avon for views of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare’s burial place Holy Trinity Church and the Memorial Theatre Gardens.

Scores of other walks can be had in the Cotswolds, the biggest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England, with miles’ worth of footpath and bridleways broken up by small villages and market towns. The Cotswold Way runs 102 miles south from Chipping Campden to Bath and passes many historical houses and churches.

For Cotswold nature spotting and wildlife parks, the kids can chatter at the 500+ birds at Birdland Park and Gardens or meet the peacocks and deer at Prinknash Bird Park.

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Slimbridge has the biggest collection of swans, ducks and geese in the world and has events, arts, talks and wildlife encounters all year round.

After Warwick Castle, families can have a day out at the Ragley Hall Estate to get lost in the 3D maze, or go to Kenilworth Castle with its children’s audio trail covering the history of the castle and the lovelorn Robert Dudley who built it in the sixteenth century to impress Liz One.

Kids will probably also like the gizmos at Stratford’s MAD (Mechanical Art and Design) Museum, Hatton Farm Village at Warwick or driving you nuts around the world’s biggest collection of historic British cars at the Heritage Motor Centre, with Land Rover Experience, nature path and children's playground.

Must see

  • Anne Hathaway's Cottage (1.2 miles)
  • Nash's House & New Place (2.3 miles)
  • Royal Shakespeare Theatre (2.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Kinwarton Dovecote (4.9 miles)
  • Charlecote Park (6.2 miles)
