General

  • Cosy tipis on a Warwickshire farm
  • A couple of minutes' drive from Twycross Zoo
  • Heated communal space with kitchen and luxury showers

Slap, bang and exceedingly central: if you like to burrow deep into countryside for a glamping good time and still be glitteringly close to towns, cities and well-known attractions, Gopsall Hall Farm is the place tipi.

Bagging a base for you, the kids – and the dogs – at Gopsall Hall Farm will have your holiday party a couple of minutes from Twycross Zoo and less than six miles from Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and the National Forest.

The city lights of Leicester are about 45 minutes’ drive to the east, Derby about an hour north, and the galleries and museums of busy Birmingham about half an hour away – just as well the tipis back at base come with comfy memory foam beds for sinking into afterwards…

Each tipi has electric hook-up and sleeps up to five humans and three dogs; bed linen is provided but please bring your own sleeping bags and towels. Barbecues are allowed on site, but if you haven’t bagged one to bring, the tipi also comes with an outdoor firepit to use free of charge.

No need to bring plates or utensils either: potter over to The Barn, a heated communal space for all guests with small kitchen and dining area along with luxury showers and hairdryers – better keep the barnet in tip(i)-top condition for all those nearby day trips…

An absolutely amazing place. Clean, tidy and everything you need.

We took our own plates, cups and cutlery, but these were all provided in the communal kitchen.

Our kids loved the open space, the woodland and fire building.

I would recommend this place to everyone and I can't wait to come back!

Myself and 4 other guys stayed in one of five tipis for one night. Had an amazing time, which was made even better with the firepit and other facilities. The kitchen and toilets seems brand new and the foam mattresses for incredibly comfortable!

    Disliked:

It was perfect. There wasn't a reception yet, so was unsure who to tell we had arrived, but the tipi was signposted and all set up.

Directions

Please note that satnavs may take you to the wrong entrance. The correct entrance is signed with 'Shornhill Farm' at the bottom. The entrance is a concrete drive, which needs to be followed for about a mile to reach the site.

From the A444 at Twycross, turn off at the mini roundabout onto B4116 towards Snarestone. Continue on the B4116 for 1.7 miles. On the right-hand side there will be a splayed out concrete drive way, two semi-detached cottages and a farm just standing back off the road. Turn in here (Shornhill Farm) and continue for a mile. At top of hill bear left just before entering Gopsall Hall Farm. Drive 50 yards and arrive at the site.

Local attractions

To the zoo! Less than two miles from base, Twycross Zoo and World Primate Centre is the only place in the UK where visitors can gibber all species of great ape among its thousand or so residents from 200 species. The zoo has a nature reserve and soft play area too to swing around in, and daily activities like keeper talks and animal feeds (wave at the meerkats when they pop up for supplies each morning and the penguins waddling around each afternoon).

Twycross is at Atherstone, Gopsall Hall Farm’s local town on the border with Leicestershire – if you’re in town on Shrove Tuesday go and have a kick about at the traditional ball game, scrummed around in Atherstone for over 800 years. The Coventry Canal runs through town too to snap scenic shots along the towpath including ones of the Coventry Art Trail, public pieces put up here by local artists.

Since Rick 3 was rediscovered in 2012 under a Leicestershire car park, interest in the possibly-bad king has skyrocketed, so make room for a day at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre to find out all the up to date info. (Sadly, however, whether he did bump off his nephews in the Tower is still a matter of fierce academic debate).

Puff the five-mile route of the Shackerstone Steam Railway to the centre and prepare to spend the full day among the interactive displays, award-winning exhibitions and Battlefield Trail through the country park.

Kids should have a smashing time at award-winning family attraction Conkers in the National Forest where there’s a heap of indoor and outdoor attractions like roaming around the 120 acres of woodland, lakes and pond, wobbling on the high and low ropes, canoeing, archery, bushcraft, discovery centre, giant ants and sliding down a mineshaft…

Townwise, Market Bosworth and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, possible adolescent home of one Mr Adrian Mole, Esq, are both within 10–15 miles for additional day trips: make it midweek for the former as Bosworth’s Wednesday market has been running since the thirteenth century.

At Ashby, the ruins of the twelfth century castle are still standing for those who fancy climbing the 98 steps to the top of the Hastings tower or going underground in the passage to the tower from the kitchen basements. Just outside the town, hire a day boat at the Ashby Canal for a lock-free meander along the waterway.
