General

  • Pub site a few minutes' drive from Alton Towers
  • Homemade food with daily menu changes
  • Easy access to the Peak District

Ah, pub campsites. How lovely they be. Especially when they dish up home-cooked nosh from a menu as extensive as the Staffordshire Moorlands’ Cross Inn: bring on the steak. And the Sunday carvery. And several desserts.

The Cross Inn Caravan Park is also a hit with families as it’s only a few minutes’ drive to Alton Towers and many guests use it as a base for trips there; the Peak District is on the doorstep too and is crammed with activities and attractions for kids, many of which are free. Huzzah!

Take your foodie pick from the newly refurbished restaurant or the pub in front of the fire; the menu changes daily and there are regular special offers to be had on spirits, ale and lager, just the ticket if you need to save some pennies for Alton Towers. There’s a play area on site too and a coin laundry is available for guests’ use.

(Please note that commercial vehicles must be left in the car park and are not allowed on site. The campsite gates are locked from 9pm – 8am and no movement of cars is allowed on site during those times.)

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Please note that the showers are metered and cost 50p for four minutes. Unfortunately we have had to take this measure as people who were not guests of the campsite were using the showers.

Ideal location for alton towers and electric hook up was a bonus as was the laundry room.

    Disliked:

Very muddy site and flint under grass so didn't drain when rained very boggy, couldn't actually get the car and trailer onto the site to pitch and Un pitch. Sadly the site looked like it was a cash in add on to the caravan park due to location. Sadly we won't be returning. Wifi didn't work at all the whole time we were on site. The young staff were friendly in the pub on the one night we had dinner there but the kids meals were overcooked

Pub staff were lovely and welcoming, breakfast was excellent in taste and value.

    Disliked:

Muddy field, rain ruined our stay. Road right next to tent field which was really noisy and kept us awake. We couldn't connect to wifi and toilets were a bit far so held it in all night! I'd stay again but would probably book a room or caravan instead of a tent!

The location is perfect for Alton Towers, and the staff are friendly. The food at what is effectively a relaxed local's pub is ordinary but cheap, and perfectly adequate.

The pub has a pool room which was a welcome feature, and the bar is cosy and welcoming.

There's nothing corporate about The Cross - it's a pleasant local pub with a field for tents and some other basic accommodation.

Female shower block was very nice, modern and clean.

    Disliked:

The tent field is just that - a field. It gets badly waterlogged and is not exactly flat. Fine if you like roughing it, maybe not if you're used to well maintained campsites with flat, properly drained ground.

The breakfast is cheap and cheerful but suffered from a rather complex pricing structure that even the staff don't seem to understand. And be warned, coffee lovers - they only have Nescafé.

The aforementioned pool room / games room is tatty, cold and could easily be much better with a little TLC.

The male shower facilities is a portakabin and while adequate, not as pleasant as the female block.

Finally, if you're a light sleeper bear in mind that the site is very close to the road and while the traffic isn't constant, you do hear the occasional car or lorry.

Overall we would recommend The Cross but a little TLC and attention to detail would make it much better.

    Disliked:

The food was terrible, cars were being driven in and out of the camp site at all hours despite there being a 9pm cerfew for cars. There was loud music and arguing ALL night long.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met your Nemesis at Alton Towers, plenty of other family-friendly fare is in the area, including a fair bit for unfair weather such as several indoor play areas and six leisure centres with pools (if you’re feeling hardy, there’s a heated outdoor pool at Hathesage too). Peak Wildlife Park, two miles away at Winkhill, has over 200 species of birds to see and is open all year round.

The Peak District National Park will keep you busy for weeks, with hundreds of miles of cycling trails including the flat Manifold Way, National Trust properties, gorges, waterfalls and archaeological sites – look out for Thor’s Cave if you’re pedalling the Manifold Way from Waterhouses.

The 13-mile Tissington Trail, following the old railway line between Buxton and Ashbourne, is popular with two-wheelers too as well as with hikers and horse riders. For more info on Peak District pursuits, there are visitor centres at Bakewell, Edale, Castleton and Bamford.

Walkers and scenery seekers should make for the spectacular Dovedale Valley near Ashbourne, a limestone ravine cut into the landscape and with the famous stepping stones over the River Dove. Start from Milldale to walk down through Dovedale and use the stones, then explore Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale via their footpaths around the countryside or along the river.

Market towns and teeny villages abound in the Peak too – the Cross Inn’s village is Cauldon Lowe, between Leek and Ashbourne and with Buxton a little further away. Visit Leek for antique shops and the Brindley Mill; Ashbourne for its pubs (one in every four buildings here is or once was a brewery) and Buxton for its July festival, opera house with regular shows and its indulgences and sights as an old spa town. Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford and Derby are all within easy driving distance too for day trips.

If golfing’s more your thing, there are dozens of clubs and courses around Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the Peak District: try Cavendish for spectacular Peak District views; Chapel-en-le-Frith for a challenge and Ingestre for a 250-yard practice area and an 18-hole course surrounded by woodland.

Finally, if your little monkeys are still gibbering for more even after Alton Towers, take them to the award-winning Trentham Estate just outside Stoke-on-Trent: they might not be too fussed on the shopping village or massive garden centre, but the Monkey Forest and Aerial Extreme there should come up trumps.
