  • Within a leading equestrian centre and eight miles from Alton Towers
  • In the Staffordshire moorlands and next to the Peak District
  • Farm park and nature trails on site

We expect you'll be busy at Beaver Hall Equestrian Centre near Staffordshire's Leek. It's in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands, near Alton Towers and on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park with piles of attractions and activities for all ages nearby – and it's also set within an excellent equestrian centre and has heaps to do on site.

Footpaths crisscross the 80 acres of Beaver Hall, a nature trail snakes around the site's 12,000 trees and the Churnet Valley railway line lies to the west for steam and diesel trainspotting. The site farm park (£2 per person) is visited by meerkats, owls and a snake each weekend in summer; there are plenty of open grass areas on site to play on, and there's a play area with swings, a seesaw swing, a rope ladder and goalposts: we don't think you'll need to nag the kids to get out and about.

But let's talk horses. Beaver Hall is within a top equestrian centre and has the Hope Valley Saddlery Shop among its first-rate facilities, where short pony rides and riding lessons are available for adults and kids. (Please note that these must be booked in advance and that for insurance purposes riders must be over two years old and weigh less than ten stone.)

Dressage and showjumping events are held at weekends, so go and compete if you're a horsey type as Beaver Hall extends its friendly welcome to guests' horses too.

Site amenities include two permanent loos, two portaloos, a shower, cold water access in the camping field and dishwashing facilities at the bottom of the caravan pitches next to the main entrance. Remember to bring your torch if you're trotting around at midnight...

Mare facilities? Another whinnying touch is the Lodge café on site, serving home-cooked food, tasty cakes, hot drinks and takeaway food from snacks to full meals. Campers can collect hot water from here to take back to their pitch and bring their freezer packs to the café to be frozen. The café has free wifi.

Beaver Hall buzzes with activity and a fun family atmosphere at weekends and in summer holidays because of its equestrian centre, nature trail, farm park and café, but is a peaceful place when the sun goes down for getting some good shut-eye.
