General

  • Within a leading equestrian centre and eight miles from Alton Towers
  • In the Staffordshire moorlands and next to the Peak District
  • Farm park and nature trails on site

We expect you'll be busy at near Staffordshire's Leek. It's in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands, near Alton Towers and on the doorstep of the Peak District National Park with piles of attractions and activities for all ages nearby – and it's also set within an excellent equestrian centre and has heaps to do on site.

Footpaths crisscross the 80 acres of Beaver Hall, a nature trail snakes around the site's 12,000 trees and the Churnet Valley railway line lies to the west for steam and diesel trainspotting. The site farm park (£2 per person) is visited by meerkats, owls and a snake each weekend in summer; there are plenty of open grass areas on site to play on, and there's a play area with swings, a seesaw swing, a rope ladder and goalposts: we don't think you'll need to nag the kids to get out and about.

But let's talk horses. Beaver Hall is within a top equestrian centre and has the Hope Valley Saddlery Shop among its first-rate facilities, where short pony rides and riding lessons are available for adults and kids. (Please note that these must be booked in advance and that for insurance purposes riders must be over two years old and weigh less than ten stone.)

Dressage and showjumping events are held at weekends, so go and compete if you're a horsey type as Beaver Hall extends its friendly welcome to guests' horses too.

The basic site amenities include two loos and a shower; remember to bring your torch if you're trotting around at midnight...

Mare facilities? Another whinnying touch is the Lodge café on site, serving home-cooked food, tasty cakes, hot drinks and takeaway food from snacks to full meals. Campers can collect hot water from here to take back to their pitch and bring their freezer packs to the café to be frozen. The café has free wifi.

Beaver Hall buzzes with activity and a fun family atmosphere at weekends and in summer holidays because of its equestrian centre, nature trail, farm park and café, but is a peaceful place when the sun goes down for getting some good shut-eye.

    Friendly welcome

    Disliked:

Al the pitches on a slope the turning circle was small and a mud bath, in fact the whole site was axle deep mud. We have a motor home and this was totally unsuitable as on a slope and very muddy, perhaps needs to be a summer site. As we didn't stay we are not able to comment on the rest of the facilities. completely unsuitable for our needs despite the booking site saying suitable for motorhome very disappointed as our first trip in our new vehicle.

From the manager...

The whole site is NOT deep in axle mud otherwise all the other caravans booked would have had a problem. Sorry you were not very confident with your brand new camper van & couldn't stay & see the great location hope you have plenty of nice holidays in it & review other sites more positively !

Very quiet, only 5 pitches all with electric and water.
Nice cafe on site with good breakfasts.
Close to Leek and not too far from Ashbourne so really good location.
Has a nice walk area (though due to the rain we didn't do much walking!)
We will stay again but not if we know the weather will be poor...imagine the site is lovely in the summer.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately very wet when we went which made the ground very boggy - not helped by previous visitors apparently driving over the grass next to the hardstanding pitches.

A peaceful, relaxing site with fabulous views and lots of wildlife, the weather was lovely, not that, the weather would change anything, if you want to relax and get away from everything then this is the site you can do it on. the amenities could be better but it looks like there are some building works being carried out, but not while we were there. the town of Leek is not far away and its close to Alton Towers and there was a rspb place just down the road on the way to leek, Drayton Manor is about an hour away. i think the cafe had wi fi but we were on holiday and wanted to get away from everyday routines.

Petting zoo is great for kids 31/08/2017

Simple field in a rustic setting. My 8 year old daughter loved the little petting zoo. There were some interesting animals and a nice chap who got out the lizards and rabbits for holding.
Nice little cafe was handy and on Sunday there was an equestrian event which was fun to watch.

    Disliked:

The walk to the toilet block wasn't ideal. There is a new block under construction which will help.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The site was perfect for kids who love being outdoors. There was enough to keep them occupied with the animals, play area, walks and watching the staff driving their tractors! The cafe was welcoming, the food was tasty and plentiful and helped when you didn't want to get the camping stove out. The toilets were clean, even when the equestrian centre was really busy. It was my horse loving daughter's idea of heaven. The riding lesson we booked was fantastic. We are already looking to book again next year.

We like beautiful view in this area and warm welcome. Quit place with very nice farm park. There is a plan for new toilets and showers which is more than needed.

    Disliked:

Only 2 toilet and 1 shower for all campsite which is mainly in the morning quit disapointing. Cleanliness of toilet and shower can be improved. We have quite issue to set up hot water in the shower. Missing hot water for dishwashing. Hardstanding places are in big slope.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments however VERY misleading to say big slope all pitches are on a slight slope & if you are in a camper we do day its best to have levellers -sorry you hadn't any !

The open space was lovely. This is a fab quiet site with very friendly helpful staff. The children really enjoyed the small animals and haven't yet stopped talking about their pony rides. 😊 The pitches are on a slope but it didn't cause any problems. Facilities very limited but they do mention this on the website & a new block is in the making. The kids liked the freedom to play, they made good use of the playground and loved watching the animals being fed. We will definitely be back in the not too distant future. Oh yes the cafe serves a wonderful breakfast 🍳 😃
