  • Well-kept, family-run and friendly park on the Welsh border
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside
  • On a seven-acre smallholding 15 miles from Chester
Ladies, gents, solo travellers, couples, kids and the dog have quite the pick of places to roam around when staying at popular Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Park near Whitchurch, as it's on the border of Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire with several days'/weeks' worth of activities and attractions in each. There'll be a rather warm welcome on site too from Pam, Richard and the team, who take pride in making their family-run park somewhere guests want to come back to. Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Park is on a refined, peaceful and well-maintained seven-acre smallholding, which comes with first-class vistas of the surrounding Shropshire countryside and excellently-kept amenities. The pitches are decently sized and all have their own water supply and electric. Amenities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area (these all updated for the 2021 season), plus a fridge and freezer, a kettle, a hairdryer, and a washing machine and dryer (small extra charge applies). Barbecues are allowed on site: for supplies, the market town of Whitchurch is about six miles to the east, while Wrexham is about 10 minutes' drive west.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The owners - very welcoming and friendly. Very accommodating to our requests. Facilities were great (washer/dryer etc). Toilets and showers clean and tidy. Great location.

Disliked: Not so much a dislike but was a shame the weather had resulted in the grassed areas between the pitches becoming a mud bath. Despite this I can imagine in the dryer summer months it would be lovely and wouldn't stop us from visiting again!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Really friendly people, lovely clean facilities, toilets regularly visited and cleaned. Quiet stay in lovely weather. Electric and water close by for easy filling of campervan water tank. Has chemical water disposal points. Had a lovely walk down quiet country lanes and found a pub The Hanmer Arms, lovely owners and staff, would recommend a visit if in the area.

Electric grass tent pitch (no awning)

Liked: Small family run site with pitches well spaced out. Toilets and showers were lovely and clean. Easily accessible from the main road but not too much road noise at night. Lovely and peaceful. No cars on site after unloading which is an added bonus with young children.

Electric grass tent pitch (no awning)

Liked: Nice clean campsite

Disliked: We went with family with kids ranged 5-14 we camp about 3-4 times a year and never have I camped on such a strict campsite, we never had any music at all just gabbing every night at 10.01pm on the dot the owners would be going round telling people to be quite and try goto bed soon, I believe this happened to a few family’s unless you we’re “regulars” they got left alone! My 14 year old daughter went the toilet at 10.30pm before we went to bed the 2 owners approached her and told her to get back to bed she shouldn’t be up this late and be going the toilet! I would never return, I wouldn’t book unless you are a couple on your own definitely not for family’s there is literally nothing on site (which we knew from reading) but also no we’re around to walk your dog or go for a lil walk. Was so glad to get home from this camping trip never felt so unwelcome on a campsite

From the manager: Hello, interesting review, couple of things! 1. We don’t encourage or want groups, especially badly behaved ones. 2. Yes, we ask for campers to be quiet after 10pm. 3. Your comment about nowhere to walk your dog (really). We are in the country, there are lots and lots of dog walks!!! I do hope you find other another site which permits poorly behaved groups. Richard

Liked: Cleanliness and friendly owners

Disliked: 10pm curfew like being back in school

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for leaving the review, but it is a shame you are leaving it anonymous, although we know which pitch you stayed on by the comments. We appreciate the feedback about the cleanliness and the friendly owners, as we certainly try to maintain a good site for our guests. Your comment about the 10pm curfew is interesting and I assume this is why you won't be returning. It is important that everyone respects the rules of the site and thankfully 99% of our guests do so. Very rarely we do get some people who can spoil it for others, which is a shame as this reflects on us as owners. Anyway, we genuinely hope you can find another site in the future, which does not have the same rules and doesn't make you feel like 'being back at school'. Regards Richard

Local attractions

This be Roman country: nearby Whitchurch was founded by the rampaging lot around the time of Caesar (the first), on a main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter. Chester, one of the main Roman towns, is about 40 minutes' drive from Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Park and has a Roman amphitheatre to see as well as Roman remains and a museum at Dewa Roman Experience. Fans of other history periods also come to Chester to see its medieval and black and white buildings and its Grade I listed city walls, among the best preserved city walls in Britain, and the 11th-century Chester Cathedral. Back near base, stop off at the well-kept Whitchurch Heritage Centre to see some more Roman remains alongside exhibits and galleries taking the town up to modern times. Around the streets, make time too for the Clock Trail or one of the other several town trails: most fortuitously, most pass a pub… Also anciently, several castles, historic houses and National Trust properties are within conquerable driving distance – Chirk Castle, Erddig Hall in Wrexham, Combermere Abbey, Cholmondeley Castle and Bolesworth Castle just to start you off. All have regular events, including an international show jumping event at Bolesworth, and a Pageant of Power, Pony Club Championships and garden openings at Cholmondeley. Here to hike? Five long-distance walking trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the Shropshire Way which runs along to the Llangollen Canal, crossing the border between England and Wales. The Sandstone Trail, 34 miles through Cheshire and Shropshire, starts and finishes in the town. Other sights and sites nearby are Shrewsbury and the follies at Hawkstone Park about 20 miles away, and the early nineteenth century Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee, a World Heritage Site with the wondrous Horseshoe Falls. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is about an hour and a quarter's drive away.
