- A mile from the town of Wem and less than ten from Shrewsbury
- Outdoor swimming pool, two play areas, two bars, a café and takeaway
- Animals, alpacas, pigs, goats, ducks, chickens and chipmunks on site
Atten-shun! Wem you're next pondering where next to pitch up in Shropshire, we'd like you to have a look at Lower Lacon Caravan Park, on the grounds of a World War II American army base a mere mile from the village of Wem.
Family-run as a caravan park since the early 1970s, Lower Lacon has a lovely – and almost accidental – chequered history as a camping site: its landscape was changed when the 'Mericans smothered most of the park in hardcore after sinking a bulldozer in the soil (Majorly careless), and the hardstanding pitches on the park today are the original concrete floors of Uncle Sam's Nissen huts.
Since getting the land back, the Shingler family has made sure that Lower Lacon has risen up the ranks to its shipshape look today as one of the biggest caravan parks in the region, with 52 acres, over 200 electric points, two loo and shower blocks, a fully-stocked shop with off-licence, two launderettes and an outdoor heated pool. A café and a takeaway have also been added to base to take care of mess essentials.
Small sorts have two play areas on site to march around, while all ranks and ages should enjoy the rest of the Lower Lacon drill: a crazy golf area to test shots at, wildlife to stalk all around, and a troupe of animals to meet including alpacas, chipmunks, pigs, kunekune pigs, pygmy goats, ducks and chickens.
And two more most saluteworthy ideas: a barn converted to a family bar for discos and live entertainment in summer, and the adults-only Windmill Lounge bar with a separate marquee for the kids. Majorly smart.

Local attractions
Lower Lacon Caravan Park is a mile from the village of Wem and less than ten miles from the Shropshire towns of Shrewsbury, Whitchurch and Ellesmere: ditch the car and use the decent local bus and train services if you don't fancy driving.
Stroll through the medieval shuts of Shrewsbury to reach its shops, ye olde pubs, abbey, castle and Theatre Severn; at Ellesmere, have more of a watery time with a punt on the Mere or Ellesmere Canal.
Whitchurch is walking territory: five tramping trails start from its Jubilee Park including the 139-mile Shropshire Way on its run to Wem in one direction and Ellesmere in the other. (Or start at Wem and wend your way north to Whitchurch on a first hike, then south to Shrewsbury on another.)
Shropshire's a pretty peaceful and uncrowded place, so take full advantage of a holiday here with a few placid pursuits too, like floats on the Shropshire Union and Llangollen canals or the River Severn, and a peer at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge, celebrating the Industrial Revolution and the work of Mr Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
