General

  • Peaceful Shropshire site with five coarse fishing pools
  • Within an hour of outdoor activities in Snowdonia and Shropshire Hills
  • Clubhouse bar and food; heated bathrooms; five minutes from Oswestry

This one’s an Eden for anglers... a peaceful, tree-lined patch of the Shropshire countryside with five pools for coarse fishing, designed and built by the proprietor who, as you might imagine, is pretty keen on the sport himself.

A five-minute drive from Oswestry, Weston Pools Village is a green and well-tended site, whose ponds for match and pleasure angling are stuffed with carp, barbell, tench and bream.

It can get chilly out there contemplating the waters, but that can soon be remedied thanks to the heated washrooms with pumping hot showers. There’s also a cheery clubhouse with a bar and fresh hot food served on Friday afternoons and for Sunday lunch, and further eating and supping options a short distance away in Oswestry. Barbecues are allowed on site.

If by chance there should be a few hours when you’re not landing 20-pound monsters on the pools, there’s grand stuff to get up to in the surrounding area. Start in Oswestry with wanders round the town and Cambrian Railway museums and walks to Oswald’s Well, where legends say the limbs of the eighth-century King Oswald were dropped by a raven. Tis a myth, but you may have heard fisherfolk telling bigger whoppers…

The place was lovely with fishing lakes and ducks, fresh air and we went for a walk around, the hobbit house was great, very fun for the wife coz she’s tiny!! I had to bend a little when getting around in there but that was the whole point, it was fab!!! We went for a quick meal for tea at the bar which was amazing!!! The clocks on the wall and the millions of bottles all lit up was great, we loved the place, service was good, seated very quickly and the ladies were helpful, polite and served us straight away. Couldn’t ask for more 👍🏻

    Disliked:

The whirring fridge in the hobbit house gave me a bad head during the night, no ones fault but my own, as I’m a light sleeper, so unfortunately I woke up at 4am very unwell, so we had to get up and leave earlier than we wanted to, or I wouldn’t have been able to drive home, so at 7am I wanted to drop the key off, but their wasn’t any place to do so, maybe a drop box for future reference. Did not dislike anything else, it was a great night, and we will do it again I’m sure!!

What a lovely park and peaceful!

We booked this as a last-minute weekend getaway, and it was lovely! It has a lot of fishing pools so many of the guests are camping for fishing, but there was still lost of families and young children around the campsite.

There are fab places to visit nearby for kiddies and the pods & toilet/showers were very clean! The pub on site also had lovely food and definitely worth a visit. Just wished we had stayed longer.

The cabin itself was beautiful and clean.

    Disliked:

We decided to stay here because they advertised 7 fishing ponds on the grounds and wi-fi in cabin. There was a fishing tournament this weekend so all ponds were closed except for 1 and that 1 that was open was packed with no available spots for us to fish. The wifi was nonexistent, the cabin was too far away from the router to get a signal. My kids complained all weekend that they couldn't play on their iPads at night because we had no internet. Also, the pub advertises all day breakfast with pancakes and on both days we tried to order pancakes, they were sold out. The only available breakfast option was a bap with egg and sausage or bacon. There is a burger king within 5 minutes drive though so you can always eat there. This weekend glamping trip was a bust and we will not be staying there again.

Local attractions

For another good local excursion that won’t interfere with your angling, amble over to the Stonehouse Brewery a five-minute walk away for tours, tastings and a bar brimming with craft beer.

Clear your head with hikes in the hills: it’s 50 minutes’ drive to the heath-covered slopes and waterfalls of Carding Mill Valley in the Shropshire Hills and to walk the nature-filled ridge of Wenlock Edge. Quad biking, zipwires and clay pigeon shooting are all available at the adventure centre.

To get active on the water, Lake Bala beckons an hour away with canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing, alternatively you could stay on land with a mountain bike trip through the Snowdonia hills or take things easy on a time travelling steam train trip.

For further time travel, there’s a trio of castles nearby: 12th-century Whittington Castle is 10 minutes' drive away, while Chirk and Powys Castles can be perused within a half-hour trip. Don’t miss a flit round Hawkstone Park Follies either (45 minutes), a madcap estate of statues and grottoes amid cliffs and crags and thick forests.

Smaller companions will be smiling all day at Park Hall Farm (20 minutes), where pig racing and lamb feeding meet zipwires, adventure playgrounds and go-karts. And there’s surely no-one who can’t love a canal boat ride from Llangollen... if this is you, get out onto the water half an hour from base.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (14.1 miles)
  • Chester Castle (24.6 miles)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (24.6 miles)
