General

  • Camping pods in the centre of Bishop's Castle
  • Each with electric, insulation and lockable double-glazed door
  • Sleeping up to four adults

Town centre camping pods – wooden it be nice? The locally crafted pods at The King's Head in Shropshire are in Bishop's Castle, an agricultural town now also home to an alternative community of arts and crafty sorts: you might like to know that the UK's oldest brewery is here too.

The pods are made just down the road from the site and are set behind the pub in the 'pod pound', an area covered in bark chips from the local surroundings and illuminated at night by security lighting. They're eight feet wide by nine feet long inside, are insulated for warmth in winter and coolness in summer, and can sleep up to four adults.

A lockable double-glazed door is at the front to give natural light and at the back, a small round double-glazed window helps to keep the living space ventilated. All the pods are carpeted and have mains electric, a small wall-mounted heater, two double sockets, a roller blind on the front door and a spotlight (another spotlight is on the front porch).

Within the pod pound, there's an menities block with ladies' and gents' toilet, washbasin and a communal shower cubicle.

Nice pod in good little setting to rear of pub with outdoor seating - pod had lighting, heating & 4 electrical sockets.
Clean facilities plenty of parking to rear of pub.
    Very friendly staff in pub.
Nice little town to stay in.

    Disliked:

Would say the pod was on the small side for 2 adults & 2 older children & dog - probably more suited to 2 adults & 1 child or 2 small children.

We thought that a bed was provided so we only brought a quilt with us so we spent the night sleeping on the floor.

Great and Relaxing Stay - Not much to do for young people 19/04/2017

Really nice and clean Pod. Great facilities! Spar and Co-op 2mins walk away. Couple of great pubs to drink and eat! Quite and relaxing place to stay!

    Disliked:

No WIFI which was a shame. Not much to really do for the younger couples, you will need to drive to Ludlow or Shrewsbury for anything much more to do! Even though there were Pubs around the area serving food, I would of thought The Kings Head would of served but didn't which was a shame!

Heater had an electric meter. Wish I had known how much money was on the meter (not much) before I went out for the night. When back it was off. No electric. No heat. Cold hard floor. Very uncomfortable. Admit I had expected a camping bed and reasonable heating for £35 a night

The location was peaceful and remote, meaning the night sky was visible providing a spectacular view of the night sky

    Disliked:

Nothing to do with the venue, the village had a clock tower which chimed every 15mins, making it a bit tricky to fall asleep

Pods were set out great for me and 2 friends staying,

We watched some football in the pub with the locals who were all friendly and nice,

The Management and Staff couldn't do more for us, learned our names after the first day, knew what we wanted to drink without asking, gave great advice on where else we could go and explore to get the full experience, even ordered us food from the local takeaway and provided plates and cutlery as we had forgot to bring ours.

We were able to park really close which helped with setting up and packing away our things,

You have everything you need within a couple of minutes walk to enjoy a few days away.

If you like a game of pool the Manager Leeroy will gladly play you anytime, but be warned none of us were able to beat him for the length of our stay,

If you didn't want to just sample the pubs and watch the football, there are plenty of walking and cycling trials nearby, also lots of local shops to browse and there was also a furniture auction on a site just along the road if you were in the market for some antique furniture.

All in all Leeroy and everyone at the Kings Head gave us a trip to remember, Me and my friends are already looking to come back later this year with our partners to watch some of the bands at an upcoming festival.

    Disliked:

Nothing to do with the Pods or Kings head and their staff,

We visited the Boars head up the road from the Kings, and the barman in the Boars head was very rude, after making us wait for 25 minutes before coming to take a food order, by that time we had lost our appitite and decided not to eat but instead of apologising for the wait he made a sarcastic comment. Then later accusing us on the street of taking one glass after we had moved onto another pub. All the other local pubs were really friendly (The Vaults, The Kings Head, Three Tuns, Six Bells) and I hope for the Boars heads sake they have other staff.

Local attractions

The King's Head is centrally located for activities such as cycling, mountain biking and angling, and has excellent opps for walks, as the Shropshire Way passes through Bishop's Castle and Offa's Dyke Path is a few miles away.

Most of Bishop's Castle is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; marked paths from town pass many hillside and valley villages of the Rivers Clun and Upper Onny. The Jack Mytton Bridleway, the Bishop’s Castle Ring, the Long Mynd, Bury Ditches and Colstey Woods, the Kerry Ridgeway and the Cantlin Stone and Botfield Cross are other recommended walks in the region.

Take a bus from Bishop's Castle to Shrewsbury from Monday to Saturdays to access the Stiperstones and The Bog Visitor Centre, Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle and Bromlow Callow, or stay in town to look over its hundreds of listed buildings.

Closer to home, try the Six Bells or Three Tuns breweries; artists' exhibitions at the town hall; shows at the SpArC Theatre; the Bishop’s Castle Heritage Resource Centre, the Rail & Transport Museum and the social history Elizabethan House on Crutches Museum.

Or have a look at Clun Castle and Clun Museum, the lead mine at Snailbeach and the impressive arboretum at Walcot Hall.
