General

  • 15 acres of Onny Valley countryside
  • River for pond dipping, paddling and fishing
  • Family-friendly pub serving food directly accessible from the site

Pooh! Pooh Sticks that is – if your kids have never played it, a stay at The Green Caravan Park is the place to teach them the art. A river, the small and shallow River East Onny, runs through it for paddling, pond dipping, the aforementioned Pooh Sticks and fishing: pick up a cheap net at the site shop and keep your little shrimps entertained for hours for mere pennies. Once they’re dried off, there’s on-land nature spotting too, at the area set aside as a nature wilderness, a play area and space galore for bike riding or outdoor games.

The Green Caravan Park has several riverside pitches, with others on the park island; in the two dingles; The Plateau; the play area field and a five-acre meadow: electric pitches are in a separate field with both riverside and hardstanding spots. The park covers 15 acres of Onny Valley countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the Long Mynd and Stiperstones Hills: it’s no wonder it’s been called ‘a little gem’ by previous happy campers.

Dogs can stretch their paws at the dog walk and exercise area on site (please keep dogs on leads in other areas of the park and clear up after them in all areas).

Food is well covered too: the family-friendly Inn on the Green serves home-cooked food and is directly accessible from the park, and there are several country inns in the local area – the thought of the steak and ale pies at The Crown is turning us Green with envy.

Clean, friendly site. Pub within campsite grounds.

    Disliked:

Narrow access road to hardstanding pitch, probably wouldn't be a problem but the surrounding grass was extremely wet (obviously no fault of the campsite). Made it difficult for us to get our caravan on and off our pitch. (we are novice caravanners and I'm sure more experienced people wouldn't have struggled like we did lol)

The site is in a beautiful location. Has a fantastic pub next door that serves great food at great prices. The Long Mynd is on the doorstep. The island is a tent only part of the site that is bounded on both sides by a stream and access is over a small bridge. Totally idyllic.
The toilets are functional and clean if not modern. Plenty of hot water.

Good location with lots of space. Great for kids who manage hours playing in the small river. Two reasonable pubs with food close by.

    Disliked:

Toilet block is the end of the barn with asbestos roof, all getting a bit tired now. Lots of hot water, but the 20p shower doesn't have much flow. Access back to the road has limited vision due to hedges, makes pulling a caravan out a bit exciting !

Shower and cleaning facilities were good. Shop on site was good. Spaces available to pitch up were numerous. Stream by the edge of the site looked fun and inviting but the overnight rain made it a little too strong to go wading in with a little one in tow.

Excellent pub at edge of campsite; welcoming of dogs inside as well as out and fantastic menu with varied choice. Excellent dog walks and stream to play in. Toilets/showers functional if a little tired but perfectly adequate. Good little shop just over lane.

    Disliked:

Requested a quiet pitch as we were camping with excitable dogs and without children; we were pitched on the main thoroughfare with young children all around making noise at all hours of morning and night, riding up and down on bikes unchecked by parents who were busy drinking and chatting loudly until late. Warden wasn't available when we knocked on. Poor phone / wifi signal if that's important to you.

Directions

Please do not come over the Long Mynd - it is unsuitable for towing a caravan. Take care when using satnav - it will take you through very narrow lanes.

From the north west:
Follow the A5 until you reach the roundabout with a right turn to the A488. Stay on here until you pass through Lydham and then turn left on to the A489. Take the first left and The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles along on the left-hand side.

From the north-east (M54 or A49):
Follow the A5 until you reach the roundabout with a left turn to the A49 - stay on this and go past Church Stretton until you reach a right turn to the B4370 at Marshbrook. Follow this until you reach the T-junction. Turn right onto the A489 and stay on here until you go just past the left turn to Bishops Castle - then turn right. The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles along on the left-hand side.

From the south
Follow the A49 northwards until you pass through Craven Arms. Turn left at the A489 and stay on it until you go just past the left turn to Bishops Castle. Then turn right, and The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles on the left-hand side.

Local attractions

Many visitors to The Green Caravan Park come for Shropshire strolls around the calm country lanes and hills, along the Offa’s Dyke path or from nearby village Wentnor.

The park is between the Stiperstone Hills and the Long Mynd, which make up the biggest area of heathland in the Shropshire hills: walk the five and a half miles of the Stiperstone Ridge from the Knolls car park for myndblowing views towards the Long Mynd. Folk flock to the area for the birdwatching too: keep an eye out for red kites, plovers and buzzards around the Stiperstones, which is a national nature reserve.

This is also castle country: Stokesay, Powis, Montgomery, Clun and Ludlow castles are all within easy driving distance. Have a wander around the festival and foodie town of Ludlow after seeing the castle or see the castle, abbey and over 660 listed buildings of medieval town Shrewsbury, both half an hour away.

Industrialists will be kept busy at nearby Snailbeach Lead Mine and historic Ironbridge and the Ironbridge Gorge Museums about 15 miles from Shrewsbury: this World Heritage Site site should keep even the urchins happy, especially going back in time to Blists Hill Victorian Town or creeping down the old Tar Tunnel.

Closer to pitch and backer in time, Bury Ditches Iron Age hill fort is between Clun and Bishop's Castle: go on to the latter for more walks, access to the Shropshire Way and the country’s oldest brewery, the Three Tuns.

Well-behaved urchins can be rewarded at several family-friendly Shropshire attractions: if they liked Ironbridge they’ll probably be fond of the historic working farm at the Acton Scott estate, featured on the BBC’s Victorian Farm, or getting close to the natives at Telford’s Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom.
