General

  • 15 acres of Onny Valley countryside
  • River for pond dipping, paddling and fishing
  • Family-friendly pub serving food directly accessible from the site

Pooh! Pooh Sticks that is – if your kids have never played it, a stay at The Green Caravan Park is the place to teach them the art. A river, the small and shallow River East Onny, runs through it for paddling, pond dipping, the aforementioned Pooh Sticks and fishing: pick up a cheap net at the site shop and keep your little shrimps entertained for hours for mere pennies. Once they’re dried off, there’s on-land nature spotting too, at the area set aside as a nature wilderness, a play area and space galore for bike riding or outdoor games.

The Green Caravan Park has several riverside pitches, with others on the park island; in the two dingles; The Plateau; the play area field and a five-acre meadow: electric pitches are in a separate field with both riverside and hardstanding spots. The park covers 15 acres of Onny Valley countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the Long Mynd and Stiperstones Hills: it’s no wonder it’s been called ‘a little gem’ by previous happy campers.

Dogs can stretch their paws at the dog walk and exercise area on site (please keep dogs on leads in other areas of the park and clear up after them in all areas).

Food is well covered too: the family-friendly Inn on the Green serves home-cooked food and is directly accessible from the park, and there are several country inns in the local area – the thought of the steak and ale pies at The Crown is turning us Green with envy.

The location was very nice, lots of walks and easy to get to places. The toilets were always clean and tidy and their is a little shop on site which the kids loved for buying sweets and spending pocket money. There was also another shop near by in case of last minute supplies needed, ie nappies drinks bread etc. The site was always being maintained by staff and they put in long hours to keep it tidy and clean. The stream running along the site was ideal for children to play in on hot days with their fishing nets. No concerns about using your BBQ which is nice as some sites can be a bit awkward. The staff were helpful and polite throughout the holiday.

    Disliked:

The camping site plots don’t give you much room between you and your neighbours so best not to talk too loudly. There was a lot of horse flies and midgies biting us this holiday, so take insect repellent, particularly if your placed near the river. Also be careful of toddlers running off near the river you need eyes in the back of your head as i found out. The site has a few do’s and don’t’s so if your looking for something a bit more relaxed just something to bare in mind. £5 charge for visitors perhaps a little excessive, but it wasn’t an issue. Take plenty of 20p’s as the showers and hairdryers etc aren’t included and you get 7 minutes of hot water after which your going to have to man up and brave the cold! Also worth noting that the ground can become wet and squelchy if there’s been a lot of rain! Lastly No WiFi on site but we survived.

After a nice drive on Thursday afternoon we arrived at reception to be greeted by the owner. The weather was really nice and we were situated next to the river at the bottom end of the park on a hard standing pitch. Unfortunately the heavens opened just as I was setting up the awning. A torrential down pour lasted for a good few hours causing the river to overflow and a few disgruntled people packed up and left. I’m glad we didn’t. Friday morning the sun was out in full force again and the river had gone back to it’s normal self. There was enough time before it rained again to dry out the soggy wet clothes from the night before. For me it’s not a british camping holiday unless it rains. Saturday the sun was at its best and we took advantage and visited some local landmarks. Roundton Hill definitely has some of the most stunning views of Shropshire but make sure you like hiking as it doesn’t half take it out of you. Friends came over who live a few mile away Saturday evening and enjoyed a few drinks with us whilst the sun was going down. Sunday morning and the holiday was nearly over. Packed up after some breakfast and a walk with the dog around the meadows. On way home we visited cardigan mill valley and stokesay castle (definitely recommended) some amazing views and a beautiful waterfall.
Throughout our time on site everything was kept clean and well maintained. The shower blocks are a little dated however if I wanted a 5 star shower I’d of booked a holiday in Dubai. I love the british countryside and no matter whether come sun rain or snow a holiday is what you make it. I’d definitely come back to this site again and will recommend to my friends and family. Oh also found out my great grandads farm was 3 mile away so I found a piece of my family history aswell.
    Great little break away.

I liked the river and the boys enjoyed fishing for crayfish.

    Disliked:

The shower needs improvement. Never mind the 20 p that you need to use it but it needs a little refurbishment. Also could do with one or two family showers cause it makes really awkward when showering with small children. From experience it's just so much easier to have one big area with small children rather than individual cubicles.

The large flat pitches. The site’s location. The owners seemed nice and helpful.

    Disliked:

The toilets were only cleaned once a day, on our last 2 days they were not cleaned at all. The whole site smelled of sewage after heavy rain. We weren’t allowed to choose our pitch - we were placed near a group of 4 families who arrived together with children and were very noisy for the duration of our stay (drinking, shouting at their children, children unsupervised etc).

Lovely quiet campsite. Loved the walks and river next to our pitch. Owner, Lin, really lovely, met us and explained everything on arrival. Saw Lin a number of times on the site, checking everyone was ok. She came to see how we were after a bad thunderstorm to make sure everyone was ok.

Toilet and shower cleaned regularly, and I liked the indoor washing up area. Plenty of hot water to showers and sinks. Washing machine and tumble dryer also available on site.

Small shop on site selling most things, very handy.

    Disliked:

Play area next to main road and not much for small kids to play on - having said that my kids loved it and spent hours playing on it, could possibly do with some updating in due course.

Directions

Please do not come over the Long Mynd - it is unsuitable for towing a caravan. Take care when using satnav - it will take you through very narrow lanes.

From the north west:
Follow the A5 until you reach the roundabout with a right turn to the A488. Stay on here until you pass through Lydham and then turn left on to the A489. Take the first left and The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles along on the left-hand side.

From the north-east (M54 or A49):
Follow the A5 until you reach the roundabout with a left turn to the A49 - stay on this and go past Church Stretton until you reach a right turn to the B4370 at Marshbrook. Follow this until you reach the T-junction. Turn right onto the A489 and stay on here until you go just past the left turn to Bishops Castle - then turn right. The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles along on the left-hand side.

From the south
Follow the A49 northwards until you pass through Craven Arms. Turn left at the A489 and stay on it until you go just past the left turn to Bishops Castle. Then turn right, and The Green Caravan Park is 4 miles on the left-hand side.

Local attractions

Many visitors to The Green Caravan Park come for Shropshire strolls around the calm country lanes and hills, along the Offa’s Dyke path or from nearby village Wentnor.

The park is between the Stiperstone Hills and the Long Mynd, which make up the biggest area of heathland in the Shropshire hills: walk the five and a half miles of the Stiperstone Ridge from the Knolls car park for myndblowing views towards the Long Mynd. Folk flock to the area for the birdwatching too: keep an eye out for red kites, plovers and buzzards around the Stiperstones, which is a national nature reserve.

This is also castle country: Stokesay, Powis, Montgomery, Clun and Ludlow castles are all within easy driving distance. Have a wander around the festival and foodie town of Ludlow after seeing the castle or see the castle, abbey and over 660 listed buildings of medieval town Shrewsbury, both half an hour away.

Industrialists will be kept busy at nearby Snailbeach Lead Mine and historic Ironbridge and the Ironbridge Gorge Museums about 15 miles from Shrewsbury: this World Heritage Site site should keep even the urchins happy, especially going back in time to Blists Hill Victorian Town or creeping down the old Tar Tunnel.

Closer to pitch and backer in time, Bury Ditches Iron Age hill fort is between Clun and Bishop's Castle: go on to the latter for more walks, access to the Shropshire Way and the country’s oldest brewery, the Three Tuns.

Well-behaved urchins can be rewarded at several family-friendly Shropshire attractions: if they liked Ironbridge they’ll probably be fond of the historic working farm at the Acton Scott estate, featured on the BBC’s Victorian Farm, or getting close to the natives at Telford’s Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom.
