General

  • Stays in the lush green grounds of a traditional Cotswolds inn
  • A five-minute drive to Hook Norton Brewery and 10 to Broughton Castle
  • Meals made with local ingredients served at the dog-friendly pub

Set your tent up in the grounds of a cracker of a Cotswolds inn with an intriguing name – The Gate Hangs High – for a hol exploring the gorgeous green hills and honey-coloured villages of an especially famed part of Oxfordshire.

This spot’s top for fans of both tradition and beer: every Friday (depending on the weather), the pub’s casks are delivered the old-school way by horse-drawn dray. And for more alcohol-related attractions, the well-known Hook Norton Brewery is a pleasant 30-minute walk away; the space hosts tours and visitors can craft their own beer for special occasions (ask at The Gate about pre-booking your slot).

Drinks are, of course, also sorted back at the pub. Cosy up next to the inglenook fireplace with a glass of something chilled, or book a table in the restaurant section for a locally-sourced meal. The chef’s pies are said to be popular with the area’s residents and the inn welcomes dogs too – it keeps canines satisfied with dog treats available at the bar.

As well as stunning views of the Cotswolds' hilly landscape, this place in Hook Norton also has essentials like a chemical disposal area and recycling facilities, plus an outdoor shower, toilets and sinks. A shop’s just down the road for gathering up supplies.

The campsite is attached to a pub that serves great food and the staff are brilliant and very friendly.

    Disliked:

The campsite itself was fine but the brewery that owns it could do with investing a bit into decorating the pub and adding a decent shower and toilet block. Only 2 outdoor toilets, one including the only shower. When the site is full there is a lengthy wait for both.

The live music on Saturday was really good. It is great having the pub there, all the staff are very friendly and it is nice that they let campers use the pub toilets which are very clean. Nice atmosphere around the campsite, I like the low-key approach.

Spacious field with plenty of room, a skip available for any rubbish, outdoor access to toilets/shower so you don't have to wait for the pub to be open.

    Disliked:

The site has only one available shower, so queues were quite long, and the food in the pub is a bit expensive

From the manager...

Just to be clear it’s not an industrial site but a recycling centre, any noise is from lorry’s driving up and down the drive way.
