General
- Small and friendly family-run site in the Nottinghamshire countryside
- A 10-minute drive from Retford town centre or the river Trent
- Barbecues allowed; pets welcome on leads
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? For many years the family behind Badgers Retreat Retford had notions of opening up a little site and sharing the simple pleasures to be had in this part of Nottinghamshire. In 2020, they fenced off a green and grassy acre of their 15-acre patch and opened their gates to folk looking to settle down for stays between Retford and the river Trent.
There's a fair bit to big up about this part of the county – kids will likely appreciate its proximity to Sundown Adventureland (10 minutes' drive), while travellers who like to stretch their legs are within easy reach of Clumber Park and the Creswell Crags (both 20 minutes).
After all that gallivanting around, Badgers Retreat Retford does its best to be a place where you can relax and unwind. Things are by and large quiet at this rural spot (that means no amplified tunes or generators, ta), with views over neighbouring farmland giving a further boost to its laidback vibes. You may also spot the owners' horses grazing nearby (dogs are welcome here, but as there are animals about you'll need to keep them on leads).
Feel free to get cooking on a raised barbecue – let the owners know in advance and they'll drop off a concrete slab for the occasion – or head down to the communal firepit. Supplies can be easily sourced in Retford town (10 minutes) with its vast array of independent business and supermarkets.

Local attractions
Some seriously scenic walks can be had in this part of the Midlands – the rather grand grounds of Clumber Park (20 minutes' drive) are apt for fancy forays through landscaped parkland, while the limestone gorge on display at Creswell Crags (20 minutes) has prehistoric caves you can seek out among the greenery.
Badgers Retreat Retford is about a 10-minute drive from the rivers Trent and Idle, where the waterside paths are likely to prove a favourite for any dogs you've brought along. There are lots of angling spots about as well, like Wetlands Lakes (15 minutes), a 10-peg fishery that's kept well stocked with carp.
Young kids who are down for some thrills may well catch wind that Sundown Adventureland is a mere 10 minutes away and try and steer you in the direction of its rip-roaring rides. Once that's out of their system, take them to other family-friendly spots like the Bassetlaw Museum (10 minutes) or Newark Castle (25 minutes).
