General

  • Water- and land-based event centre in 270 acres of parkland
  • Easy access to Nottingham city centre, rail network and airport
  • Country walks, nature trails and lots to do for kids

What do you reckon is the main flavour of activities at this Nottinghamshire site? Yup, top of the menu at the National Water Sports Centre near Nottingham are all sorts of watersports: you'll be able to tackle a whitewater course for canoeing, kayaking, rafting and tubing; a waterpark with cableway for wakeboarding; paddleboarding, open-top canoeing, turbo paddling and open-water swimming.

But! This is a land-based activity centre too, so if you don't fancy plunging into the foamy depths/would quite like to stay dry for a day, other options can be tackled at the outdoor adventure zone where there's an aerial adventure course, mini golf, Segway hire, play area and mini e-combat, as well as a newly created footgolf course.

There's also an assault course, country walks and nature zones on site (please note some activities are subject to availability and must be booked at reception).

Feeling a bit faint just from reading all this and think you'd rather spectate? The centre has kindly included a country park café and a regatta lake where it hosts its own events like rowing and canoe regattas, dragon boat racing and triathlons.

Although all this energetic excellence is only 10 minutes from Nottingham city centre, it's well into the shire countryside and away from anything townie, as it's deep in the 270 acres of parkland of Holme Pierrepont Country Park.

The campsite part of the park covers 18 acres and has a facilities block with showers and toilets, and a site shop selling groceries and camping supplies.

Lots is on offer too to keep the kids amused, including a sandpit, outdoor table tennis and netball, play areas on the site and in the main country park, and a nature trail to explore just a short stroll away.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Stayed 3 weeks..It was very peaceful. The pitch we chose was hard standing with electrical hookup which was fairly roomy for our 24footer. Not too far from the toilet/shower block. Toilets were very clean and cleaned regularly. Showers were lovely and hot although I only found 2 (out fo 5) which had good jets. Once showered though it is very small in the area at the front of the cubicle where you dry/change. The showers got blocked once so I had to move to the next empty cubicle to dry off and dress as the water had come into the front area. The reception was manned when we arrived and the lady helpful with directions etc. The shop however is extremely limited with items but there is a large Morrisons around the corner at the top of Ambergate, as is a pub/restaurant, chinese, pet store etc so we went there for our provisions. It is a lovely large site opposite the water sports area where my hubby took the dog for a walk around the park although there is a large area at the very end of the park itself if you do not want to cross the road into the water sports area. There is a small cafe there. The barrier code is changed regularly adn a large barrier is put down at night and can only be opened by security, so I felt secure whilst I was there alone and also when we had to come back home and leave the van there. For the time of year it was very quiet albeit quite a few caravans were on site. Also note that it is close to the pathway of East Midlands Airport but I didn't mind the few aeroplanes that came over and enjoyed trying to spot them. It's a great site if you want peace and quiet to write/read or just lounge about. My hubby loves walking so he enjoyed the walks out with the dog.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike really. Shame about the limited goods in the little shop but Morrisons not far away. The shower's drains blocking could do with having a look at though whilst it is quite. There is very little in the way of a park for the children (although we do not have any small ones) Perhaps add a couple of football nets to save the children playing football around the caravans?

    Disliked:

First of all there was no one on the campsite reception. So I had to go to the Centre. They they wanted payment, but I then had to prove that I had already payed in full. The site is dirty and the toilets are dirty and in need of repairs

If you've any energy left over or you're hardily thinking that the watery and land-based activities of the National Water Sports Centre just aren't enough, get along to the cycle paths of Colwick Country Park on the outskirts of Nottingham, which have miles of waterside biking alongside the River Trent.

Wildlife watchers can wander around Skylarks Nature Reserve, owned by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, highly recommended by the National Water Sports team and 15 minutes' drive from the site.

The cricket ground of Trent Bridge, home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, is 10 minutes' drive away.
