The Old Vicarage: The 17th-century Old Vicarage

General

  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Cave bar on site with TV room, games and drinks

You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s.

There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away.

Guest facilities on site centre around the Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine.

Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Bookings must not be for more than 15 consecutive nights.

Group bookings of 15 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The games room is open between 19/04 and 30/09.

Group bookings of 10 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Nice stream, mature trees, plenty of space

    Disliked:

Toilet/shower block absolutely disgusting. If toilet paper isn’t a problem for us, as we always bring our own, then hot water is not existing. Block seems always durty, perhaps never gets cleaned. Washing up station is falling apart, tap is hanging on its last straw. Bare in mint, site is too close to the major road and as a result too much noise from traffic.

Beautiful site, with river running through it which our children loved to play in. Rope swing stepping stones, we took inflatable rings for them to lie in too. They loved it.
The site was clean and the owners friendly.
    Would return again.

    Disliked:

Could do with better lighting in the toilets and maybe a few more showers. Apart from that can't complain at all.

Stream. Best part of the site. Kids loved playing on the zipline and swing.
An trying to catch the fish.

    Disliked:

Toilets. Showers. Only have 2 toilets and 1 shower for the whole site. Up some steep steps which doesn’t cater for all.
Too dark in the toilet cubicle and never enough toilet roll.
Shower horrendous. Door doesn’t lock for a start. Constantly scolding hot or cold. An no water/power every time someone flushed the toilet or washed their hands.

Pot Wash station. Never any hot water no mater what time you went. And again no lights working in there!

Dog!! States everywhere to keep dogs on leads. Everyone on the camp did so… Apart from the owners!!!! They had a little dog running free around the camp. Chewing anything it could pinch from people. Trying to hump other dogs. If you tried to ‘sheww’ it away, it went to bite you!! Not happy about this. Reported several times and owners didn’t care!!
Also having chickens roaming free?! Sh1tting everywhere. Wouldn’t mind if it was a farm we was on but it’s not.

Rave. Few miles over there was a rave/party going on most of the night starting from like midnight. All you could hear was the thud thud thud. Absolutely horrendous. Apparently happened every year at a old coal mines.

If your a light sleeper then it’s not one for you as it’s right on the motorway. You hear it all going by …

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too.

Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area.

For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground.

An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum.

For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
