General

  • Small friendly farm with good local amenities
  • Five minutes from the market town of Retford
  • 20 minutes from Sherwood Forest and close to Sundown Adventureland

There's lots to like about Longholme Farm five minutes from the Nottinghamshire market town of Retford: its welcome is warm, its camping area spacious and its location smashing, 20 minutes from the Robin Hood-based shenanigans of Sherwood Forest and close to both Sundown Adventureland and the outdoor water splash area of King's Park.

Longholme is a smallholding in the Nottinghamshire countryside welcoming all types of guests as well as well-behaved pets. It's run by very friendly and helpful Gail and Steve, who are always on hand with tips and info about the local area, including eateries nearby for all tastes and budgets, the good local transport links and the many outdoor activities in the area.

Only a small number of pitches are allowed on Longholme's four-acre field, so you'll have plenty of space and can pitch wherever you like. Toilets and showers are available for guests.

Retford five minutes away has a weekly market, a Thursday and Saturday general market, a Friday antiques and collectibles market, and a farmers' market once a month. Three large supermarkets are within easy reach of the farm.

The space afforded so that the kids can run around, climb hay bales, play football, free to use bikes/scooters and the swings/climbing frame. You can let the kids run free, site is safe with no public access.

Although in Retford you feel as if you're miles from anywhere, you have to listen carefully and hope the wind is in the right direction to vaguely hear a train from the track a couple of miles away, this place is wonderfully quiet save the sounds of the kids having fun.

Pitch anywhere, choose your view, mingle with others or be on your own it's your choice. No extras for awnings, pup tents, kids or those annoying taxes that big tents seem to attract.

Been three times this year and will be back a few more, Steve and Gail couldn't be more welcoming or accommodating!!

Love this site. We always feel welcomed here and the site owner always gets to see everyone. This is our second stay and the best thing is he fact that it's so close to everything (20-25 minute walk into town) but it feels like you're miles from anywhere. The owners, Steve and Gail have done a wonderful job and the site is always clean and tidy. The bathrooms clean and the showers are lovely. This holds up even when the site is busy.
The communal fire pit is a lovely touch where you can socialise with other campers or there are individual fire pits if you prefer to have one nearer to your tent. I honestly can't fault the place and what they've done with us. Exactly what we like from a small site and we certainly be back yet again(this was our second visit this year).

    Disliked:

That other campers feel it's not up to them to clean up their own mess. Twice this week others felt it was ok to leave their rubbish for Steve and Gail to pick up. Not impressed with this as my thoughts are that if you go somewhere, you leave it as you find it.

The children enjoyed the play park and the goal.

    Disliked:

The website claims that there are only pitches for 10 tents and 5 caravans. During our stay there were at least 30/40 pitches so the campsite was full to overflowing, especially as most pitches had at least 4 people.
The mixed toilets/wash facilities are not set up for this number of people (2 showers and 3 toilets-one of these in with a shower) and my shower on Saturday morning was a trickle.
Unsurprisingly there was no toilet roll left on Sunday morning. We didn't bother with showers on Sunday as we imagined it would be the same situation.
There is only 1 washing up station, which is ridiculous for this number of people.
There is also only 1 tap for water.
The owner did not greet us on arrival (although he did greet our family who arrived slightly earlier) and we did not see him throughout the duration of our stay, including when we left.
We had booked a pitch with electric but when we arrived this was unavailable as one of the owner's splitters was 'missing'. This was rectified when his wife went to the shop to buy one. It concerned me greatly that there were a large number of EHU coming out of one base station.
It was extremely noisy until well after 11pm on both nights. Lots of young children were running around squealing and playing with torches until this time. This made it very difficult for my younger children to get to sleep at a time that I think is appropriate.
All of these problems would not have been such an issue if the campsite stuck to 15 pitches.
I always look for quiet and small campsites (which this one claimed to be) to avoid these sort of issues so was extremely disappointed with this.

From the manager...

Hi Sam I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us on the weekend of the 23 June, I will admit the we were over booked that weekend but only by 4 tents but there were a lot of kids, and as for the showers having a trickle I can't understand why as the showers are fed of mains water pressure so will never happen, the only thing that could happen is the water could go cold (which has never happened yet) I must apologise for the lack of toilet rolls but we did get through more than normal,
As for me not being around I can assure you that I spend most of my time being visible so if any one has any issues (like lack of toilet paper) I can rectify them, if you read all my reviews they all comment on the fact that I'm always on hand,
Please accept my apologies for your bad experience at longholme

Very friendly site everyone speaks to one another and having the communal evening fire pit brings people together. Plenty of space for kids to run around and play without being close to the tents. Toilet & shower block were fully stocked and clean on arrival. Only 25 min drive from sherwood Forrest and Clumber Park is slightly closer. Liked the fact that once pitched most vehicles were removed and parked down the other end of the site. Quiet site with only the sound of kids playing & birds singing. I did mention to the owner that one of my dogs doesn't like spaniels as one was not on a lead & he kindly had a quiet word and it was not a problem. It is only a small site but the owner has provided so much to keep the kids happy all day...... play equipment, bales of straw to climb about on, trampoline, football area, slip & slide...... my 2 are boys aged 10 & 15 and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves while I enjoyed sitting in the sun reading. Shops, pubs etc are 5 minutes away.

    Disliked:

Upon arrival it was busy with others having just arrived too & there were no signs as of where to go to check in and be told where to pitch. The owner did come over and although a bit stressed he told us where to pitch roughly but we had to figure out where anything was ourselves......toilets not cleaned or restocked from Saturday evening through to us leaving Sunday lunchtime & it was a little too busy for just 3 toilets and 2 showers. I will just remember to take a spare loo roll with me next time because we will definitely go back!
