General

  • Pub site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Lounge with open fire, beer garden and pool tables
  • Food including Sunday lunches and pub grub

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown pub, restaurant and caravan park in Lincolnshire's Holbeach Hurn near Spalding has all sorts of proper touches you'll likely like to see in an inn, like a warmly welcoming atmosphere for all manner of customers, a main lounge with an open fire, beer garden, outside play area, large marquee and a games room with TV pool table, air hockey and arcade games. And plenty of space in the adjoining grounds for a bit of football or rounders if you're the type to feel a tad competitive after a pint…

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the Sunday lunches, mixed grills, trad pub grub, bar snacks, veggie choices, piles of homemade desserts, and proper chips handcut from locally-sourced spuds, from a menu dished up every day of the week from 9am to 9pm. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too.

The pub was taken over in the summer of 2015 by Carol and Doug, who want their inn and camping guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: they've added a garden bar with a second pool table, and also look after a large patio to the rear of the pub, a landscaped pond and an extensive car park.

Everyone was so friendly. My 2 grandchildren said its the best camp site they've ever been to. l have to agree ,its up there in my opinion too. The childrens hang out hub was brilliant. My 2 grandkids learnt to play pool in there lol ,& made some lovely little friends. All the parents could let the children go off to play around the hub & play area & know they were safe. l even let my 2 go off to play by themselves there, l felt at ease doing this at this site, which lve never done before on other sites. My grandchildren are 7 yrs & 9 yrs . l would highly recommend to stay here ,if you've got children , lts situated as a good base to explore Hunstanton, Heacham, Skegness & much more . Very dog friendly, Food was good. We would definitely go back. Rose & Crown gets our thumbs up.

needs a bit of tidy up here & there, but most sites do.

From the manager...

We are glad you enjoyed your stay here! Our site is under refurbishment and we acknowledge the fact that it does need a bit of a tidy up which we will eventually get round to. Thankyou for your comment.

    Disliked:

Very noisy at night some nights till early hours.
    Seemingly no regulation or rules.

Facilities need improvement but to be fair this is underway.

From the manager...

We apologize for the noise yet if you had informed a member of staff, we would've easily dealt with this. Again we are still under refurbishment, and are hoping to be finished some time soon. Thankyou for your comment.

We liked the fact that there were no size restrictions for pitches, the pub was a friendly area to eat when we wanted to.price was fairly good.A nice site, would come again.

    Disliked:

Although pitches we're not restrictive in size, would have been nice to book specific pitches so we were guaranteed next to family and friends, we didn't have a problem because we managed to arrive early but could have been annoying. We were next to wooded area so loads of kids were walking past and making a noise, the area was fenced off before we left luckily for the next people.

From the manager...

We are sorry to hear this, will can try next time to place you somewhere else but we can not guarantee. We are glad you enjoyed your stay.

Friend cancelled last minute which meant only me and my 6 year old were going. Staff helped me put the tent up which would of been impossible to do myself!
Food was lovely and reasonably priced and shower block was very clean and nice! My son liked the park

    Disliked:

On our last night we got woken up 1am by some drunk people from the caravans who hovered in the toliets for a while and were very loud. This was only mid week and meant we were a bit tired the next day but appreciate this isn't the sites fault

From the manager...

thank you for your comments. sorry you were disturbed. we have now printed a leaflet to give to people asking them to just be considerate of other campers and things hopefully this will make them aware

The children loved the park and it was dog friendly which was great as taking out dog with us for 1st time. Staff helpful when we had trouble with our hook up due to us not realising it was actually working.

    Disliked:

The mess and junk behind the two caravans, one caravan was popped up with a chair! Not very safe, and discarded kitchen equiptment.
The toilet blocks were not very clean and never any toilet roll when i went. Luckly i took my own.
One evening someone had allowed their child to walk on the sinks in the ladies an left a real mess, dirty feet prints and dirty water all over the side of the sinks, it was still there the following morning, toilet block was not checked often enough.
I had to move the stool in the shower room (dropped my shampoo) and wished hadnt for all the dirt and hair were under the foot of the stool in the corner and the shower head only stayed in place thanks to a hair band that had been tied round it to keep it up!
Our first night there was a large group making noise until 12.30 when my husband complained to the bar as they had woken both the children, they were also smoking weed!!!
1st night i did some washing up there were some food bits left on the sink they were still there the following day and the day after they were on the floor, a bin is needed in this area and a shelter for when it rains.
Site was very busy and there was no organisation for pitches, we had to go infront of the two dumped caravans (one with its door hanging off, full of junk) or else we would of been next to the big group of pot heads!
We actually left a day early and only stayed that long for the children.

From the manager...

the toilet rolls ran out one morning due to been sent the wrong rolls for our holders, but the right ones where delivered by 9am. at the time you came there was other pitches you could of gone on. i did ask the group you mentioned to keep the noise down, (they have also commented on here that they did make a bit of noise and tried to keep it down) the washing up area is going to have a cover put up, the showers and toilets are cleaned morning and evening and i also check through the day, (the cleaner does not live on site so can not be expected to check every time someone uses them) we do have notices asking people to clean up after themselves, ie mop floor or wipe washing area down, we do not expect them to start scrubbing the place down only to keep it tidy, but sometimes children will do the washing up and will forget to move things, the caravans you mentioned, one is used for storage, and the other is waiting to be moved of site, (we had only just replaced it with a newer caravan.)

Nice big campsite, play area was a massive hit with the children. Dog friendly meant our dogs could come with us. Friendly staff, pub on site that did take away food if needed.

    Disliked:

Every time I used the toilet (granted around 3-4 times in all) there was never toilet paper. Campsite can be a little loud with revellers from the pub but a decent pitch with little distance from the pub made this trivial.

From the manager...

We apologize for this, we will ensure there is enough available from now on. Glad you enjoyed your stay here, hope to see you at some point in the future!

Directions

From the A17 at Fleet Hargate, turn at the signpost Hovenden House and after 1/4 miles turn left, signposted Holbeach Hurn. After approximately 3/4 mile on the right through the village is the Rose and Crown Pub. A few yards further on and the site entrance is on your right.

When your satnav states you are at your destination, proceed straight ahead where you will see the Rose and Crown Pub (bright yellow) on your right, then proceed for another 30 yards where you will see the site entrance again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 19 miles. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.
