General

  • Pub site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Lounge with open fire, beer garden and pool tables
  • Food including Sunday lunches and pub grub

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown pub, restaurant and caravan park in Lincolnshire's Holbeach Hurn near Spalding has all sorts of proper touches you'll likely like to see in an inn, like a warmly welcoming atmosphere for all manner of customers, a main lounge with an open fire, beer garden, outside play area, large marquee and a games room with TV pool table, air hockey and arcade games. And plenty of space in the adjoining grounds for a bit of football or rounders if you're the type to feel a tad competitive after a pint…

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the Sunday lunches, mixed grills, trad pub grub, bar snacks, veggie choices, piles of homemade desserts, and proper chips handcut from locally-sourced spuds, from a menu dished up every day of the week from 9am to 9pm. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too.

The pub was taken over in the summer of 2015 by Carol and Doug, who want their inn and camping guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: they've added a garden bar with a second pool table, and also look after a large patio to the rear of the pub, a landscaped pond and an extensive car park.

Good play area for children and food is well priced- excellent showers and very good value

    Disliked:

Too many big dogs off leads with young children on the site. Clear signs telling owners to use leads but being ignored and fights between dogs happened twice in close proximity of our children.

From the manager...

We are looking to solve this problem soon, with having a dog off lead area right at the bottom of our field. We apologize for any bad behavior between big dogs but we are looking to resolve this issue. Thankyou for your comment and hope you visit again soon.

Great location, nice people, excellent value. 16/08/2017

  • Liked:

Caravan was very good value for money. Although fairly old it was very clean and everything worked as it should.
The site, located adjacent to the pub, was OK and new shower facilities very good, still a bit of work to do to make it an A1 site but seems to be moving towards it.
The pub was great, friendly bar people, excellent beer, great value food which was generous and tasty.
Location was also good for us, cycling was great around the almost traffic free country lanes and a trip to Brancaster beach (super beach about 1 hour away) was an easy drive.
Overall a really pleasurable short break caravan holiday and would return as nice to find a site not geared for total profit.

From the manager...

We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Our shower and toilet facilities are still under refurbishment, and we are aiming to improve and abnormalities. If you do decide to return, there is another beach that i would recommend. it is less than one hour away and is called Bawsey Pits in Kings Lynn. Its not so much of a beach but is more of a giant lake but has sand. Dogs are allowed and there are many to spots to choose from. The water is beautiful, id recommend you look it up if you next come down. Hope to see you some time in the future, thankyou for your comment.

Abandoned caravans and pub equipment and broken bricks a little off putting

From the manager...

We apologize for the inconvenience of an 'abandoned caravan' however this wasn't the case. We have recently had some new caravans been brought in and we have replaced the old with the new. They have been moved out of view so that they don't get in the way, or seem off putting. Like it has already been said, the pub is still under refurbishment which therefore means will not be in pristine condition currently, but we are working hard to change this. Thankyou for your comment.

Laid back atmosphere, friendly staff and locals, nice decent priced food, play area, sheltered outdoor area

    Disliked:

Could do with a tidy up and a bit of modernising - had to find own spot to pitch tent with an electric hook up so a bit chaotic, only one person on bar trying to serve and check people in so was busy

From the manager...

Our facilities are still under refurbishment, and we aim to make the place more appealing to customers. We tend to let you have your own time to find a place to pitch and get set up, yet if you needed some help, we would've easily assisted you. Hopefully this time next year everything will be up to scratch and moving more smoothly. Thankyou for your comment.

Directions

From the A17 at Fleet Hargate, turn at the signpost Hovenden House and after 1/4 miles turn left, signposted Holbeach Hurn. After approximately 3/4 mile on the right through the village is the Rose and Crown Pub. A few yards further on and the site entrance is on your right.

When your satnav states you are at your destination, proceed straight ahead where you will see the Rose and Crown Pub (bright yellow) on your right, then proceed for another 30 yards where you will see the site entrance again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 19 miles. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.
