General

  • In a countryside setting but only two miles from Skegness
  • Fishing on site: land catches of up to 26lb
  • Free hot showers in a modern amenities block

Fishing on a large lake in the lovely Lincolnshire countryside and only five minutes' drive to Skegness: how super.

Fishing for whoppers too, as anglers have landed specimens of up to 26lbs at Birchwood Fishing and Camping two miles from Skeggy, so bring your fishing tackle, buy a day ticket from the team and settle down to see what can be landed among the common carp, koi carp, ghost carp, mirror carp, crucian carp, rudd, roach, tench and bream.

Walks are quite super around these surrounds too… and some are accessible straight from the site entrance and through the surrounding fields to Skegness or Winthorpe and wherever else your feet fancy, perhaps after sinking a pint at the latter's Batemans brewery?

Birchwood is mainly grass and has a modern loo and shower block with disabled facilities, free hot showers and a washing-up area at its end. Mains sockets for hairdryers and the like are also available in both the ladies' and the gents' loos.

Dogs are welcome on site, but must be kept on a lead at all times and cleaned up after.

Great set up, met some nice people even noisy ones where nice, and polite. Fishing is tops but a little easy for a plonker like me, showers good, toilets good, The geese a bloody nightmare but still managed to sleep pretty good. not spoilt but could do with a few picnic benches to save on taking so much kit. will be going again

Was a very friendly and relaxed camp site and very clean

    Disliked:

The showers were a little dated and there wasn't no where to put anything when in the shower so had to leave clothes outside of the shower even towels as they would only become wetter than you

showers free and sensible so there's no wasting water; don't ... 31/08/2017

showers free and sensible so there's no wasting water; don't have to keep dodging endless cascades and watching shower soap disappear before you've used it... pitches regimentally organised which isn't a bad thing else we'd be running each other down trying to get around tents in our cars (this doesn't mean the place is small, it's economically laid out and affords the best space for everyone) ...dogs free...possibly the cleanest and cheapest site in Skeggy...trees (birch?) help to cut down wind...water is next to large waste bins (for anybody like msyelf who couldn't understand the directions)...the bins were full to brimming due to bank holiday Monday but next morrning they were empty...site isn't next to busy main road so it's nice and peacefull...10 pm arrival time limit is decent compared to sites you can only arrive at till 7 pm (and this website posts wrong departure time, it's not as early as 10 am, it's 11 am) - quite honestly I could stay in this well looked after field for a few months - well done guys - and well done the nice couple who clean toilets & showers

    Disliked:

didn't dislike it, but it was a fact that the far shower cubicle door couldn't be closed and could do with a few shavings off door's edge; or possibly bank holiday's heat swelled the wood and it usually closes?

Local attractions

Lincolnshire's seaside capital Skegness is two miles from Birchwood Fishing and Camping, as is Fantasy Island and the indoor market land of Ingoldmells, another popular destination on the Lincs coast.

Skeggy has quite a bit to see after its beach and pier-less amusements, such as Natureland Seal Sanctuary on North Parade, where visitors can see the seals being fed and have a look at loads of other animals like penguins, tarantulas and tropical butterflies. (If it's animals, conservation and nature you're after, see also the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve, the nearby Northcote Heavy Horse Centre and the National Parrot Sanctuary.)

Just up the coast at Ingoldmells, take the kids to the indoor and outdoor big and small rides of Fantasy Island (this should work as a nice bribe to get them to accompany you to the huge market afterwards) and then a short journey further north to more seaside at Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea.

Finally, if you care for a spot of fruit picking, nearby Willow Farm lets you pluck your own among its ten-acre field and has a farm shop selling more goodies for you to take back to base.

Must see

  • Sandringham (25.0 miles)
  • Holkham Hall (25.1 miles)
  • Houghton Hall (27.4 miles)

  • Gunby Hall (5.3 miles)
  • Gunby Hall Estate: Monksthorpe Chapel (6.7 miles)
