General

  • Peaceful Lincolnshire Wolds park less than a mile from Market Rasen
  • On the Lindsey Trail for cycling, walking and riding
  • Dogs and horses welcome

If we were fortunate enough to possess our own nag, we'd surely be cantering forth to this campsite on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds as soon as ever we could. For Walesby Woodlands Caravan Park, run by Paul and Julia in a peaceful woodland setting, is bang on the Lindsey Trail, yielding miles upon miles of trotting (and ambling, and cycling) opportunities through the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Walesby is a quiet park, used as a base by clever campers who want to explore the attractions and villages of the Wolds or delve into local countryside pursuits like fishing, golf and wildlife watching. It's less than a mile from Market Rasen for supplies, shops, pubs, fishing, golf and more nags at Market Rasen Racecourse, and within driving distance of Skegness and the Lincolnshire coast.

The pitch price includes free hot water for the centrally heated shower and loo block. Walesby Woodlands also has a launderette, wifi, Calor gas for sale and an automatic security barrier for added safety. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Julia and Paul run a café on site on high season and bank holiday weekends; at other times, Market Rasen should have most of what you need, including traditional shops, a farm shop, bakery, butcher and Tesco.

Immaculately clean and well managed site. Lovely round walk direct from the campsite, perfect for dog walkers. Unfortunately we ran out of time to wander around the village but it looked very quaint with some pretty cafes and restaurants....Very helpful management on site...we arrived late and were shown direct to our pitch....highly recommend.

The toilet & shower block were very clean & tidy. The owners were very welcoming on our arrival, but we never saw them again. Beautiful walks and bike rides in the woods and surrounding areas, you have to like getting muddy though. Loads of dog poo bins in the woods, so it was nice to not see bags thrown into trees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    All pitches were very level.

    Disliked:

The kiddies play park is rubbish. We would have liked a rough guide to the walks through and around the area. Not particularly cheap for out of season.
The electric trips out easy, so we had to remember to switch heating down or off when boiling the kettle or cooking. Think we had a power cut on our first night from midnight until 4 am. Like I said nobody came round checking if all was well.

From the manager...

The overall ratings for last 35 reviews clearly contradicts this review.
Yes, there was a power outage at 12:15 am until approximately 4 a.m. dealt with by the site manager during this time, calling out National Grid to repair. Campers that were up and around were talked with, however it would not be prudent to go around waking everyone up, just to tell them we were already fixing the problem. Management was on site and around every day during the holidays to address any problems visitors may have. All that was required was to ring the well defined bell on the Reception doorway for a 24 hour a day response or contact the warden adjacent to the Reception.
The standard winter rate of £18 for a pitch (including electric projected to cost over £6 per day as used in this case) and particularly over a holiday when many places charge higher rates, is not expensive. Operating costs in winter are higher than summer, which is why many places do not open during 2 - 4 months of winter.

Local attractions

For day trips, Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes on the Lincolnshire coast can be reached in about an hour in the car and lovely Lincoln is within about 40 minutes' drive: did you know its cathedral was used in the film of The Da Vinci Code…?

If you prefer to stick closer to home on your own feet/wheels, Walesby Woodlands is on both the 75 miles of the Lindsey Trail and the National Cycle Trail One. The Viking Way, from the Humber Bridge in north Lincolnshire to Oakham in Rutland, also passes near the park, as does the 78-mile circular Lincolnshire Wolds Way (handily broken into daily sections of about six hours each). Very close to home, many tired feet have rested at the walkers' church in Walesby.

Lincolnshire is pretty nifty for market towns and shopping, like at Louth, Horncastle and Woodhall Spa, all well within an hour's drive; be sure and wheel back many samples from Louth's award-winning The Cheese Shop.

At Woodhall Spa, have an old-fashioned evening out at Kinema in the Woods, entertaining those around the area since 1922 and with its own eighteenth century organ – and organist.

Must see

  • Lincoln Cathedral (14.6 miles)
  • Lincoln Castle (14.7 miles)
  • Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace (14.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Tattershall Castle (21.5 miles)
  • Maister House (23.6 miles)
