Fire and Stars Woodland Camping: Spacious and secluded pitches - whatever the size of your tent

General

  • Almost-wild camping pitches in 47 acres of the National Forest
  • Twycross Zoo 10 minutes' drive away; pub across the road
  • Income from pitches supports the preservation of the natural habitat

Fire and Stars Woodland Camping is an almost-wild camping site within 47 acres of National Forest woodland, just outside the little Leicestershire village of Newton Burgoland and 15 minutes’ drive from Coalville.

Stays here are not just eco-friendly but also actively help to preserve this gorgeous location: income generated on site goes towards supporting the ongoing protection of these woods and natural habitats so that they can be enjoyed by future generations too.

You’ll really have a chance to get to know those habitats for yourself on a stay here, setting up right there in the forest on spacious pitches that have firepits already dug out for safe campfire building. As it’s a proper eco-conscious site, there’s no mains water or electricity here, so you’ll need to bring torches, lamps and water supplies along with you. It’s not entirely wild camping though, as you’ll have access to compost toilets, portaloos and a shower.

There’s much fun to be had on site and in the surrounding National Forest, looking out for wildlife, climbing trees and the like. You can also easily get out to all sorts of family attractions including a zoo, a farm park and a watersports centre. If the only thing missing is a pint, you may well be pleased to hear that there’s a traditional pub just opposite the site that serves up evening meals and welcomes kids and dogs (with a play area and beer garden to top it all off).

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

A charge of £2.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

The camp site was exactly what we were hoping for. Private, well maintained, fire pit, quiet. The staff member on site was so so helpful and kind-- he took some time out to show us a few unique ways of starting fires and told us about some local events taking place to check out. There were two pubs within reach so we only had to pack breakfast/snacks as we had our dinners there (made the task of cooking/cleaning much easier as its only once a day!). There are lots of options for walks near by and things to see/do. I will definitely camp here again :)

    Disliked:

I didn't dislike anything! Looking at other reviews I would just say-- yes, there were only two toilets but I never found myself waiting or in a queue. They were in decent enough shape for porter loos and a very short walk from the site. There isn't running water but we only used about 1/8th of the water we brought with us. We really didn't need as much as we had thought.

From the manager...

Lauren

Thank you for your kind feedback and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with ourselves.

Progress is being made in installing running water on site, and once we are connected a new toilet and shower block will follow for our guests.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our site in the future.

Kind Regards

Susan

Excellent site with perfect 'wild' pitches!14/09/2020

Location - midway for our family who live in different parts of the UK.
Pitches - private and in the forest! absolutely perfect.
Management - Andy was on-site the whole time and very helpful.
Campfire - every pitch has a campfire and logs available to buy.

    Disliked:

No running water yet, but we were told this will come soon - while it didn't bother us, the addition of running water for washing up would make Fire & Stars the perfect camping spot!

A new site so they are still learning but essentials needed: tap/bins01/09/2020

    Surrounding area, camp fire area,

    Disliked:

No bins so had to take your rubbish home with you (not ideal when most cars are packed to the rafters for camping), only 5 trailors to transport gear from car park to site (means that it is very unlikely you get to use one at the end of the weekend when everyone is on their way home and packing up). Website stipulates pitch site is under the trees, our tent and many others were not pitched under the trees as the individual clearings were not big enough despite checking dimensions on website, still a great spot but an adjustment to the website description would manage expectations better. Portaloos were a bit grim. No running water - not even an outside tap - bit tricky. Car park far too small for a busy weekend. Rubble put down on car park area made of bricks, glass and tiles, was a bit worried about car tyres. Track to site entrance very muddy and slippy - some bark chippings on a wet weekend would remedy this. Owner a bit curt and scary.

The little sites are great. Ours had just been created but we had great fun clearing it a little wider. Plenty of space for two hammocks, two tents and chairs round the fire pit.

    Disliked:

    No showers and two portaloos.

    Disliked:

Shower was a bit of a walk up to the pub and wasn't easy, port-a-loos also pretty stinky and gross. Woodland tent pitches didn't actually have enough room to pitch the tents in because of the trees so you had to pitch out in the walkway which was a bit noisy.
