General

  • Among hills and countryside seven miles from Market Harborough
  • Wildlife haven with spectacular views and sunsets
  • Indoor communal area with seating

Base yourself at Barford Top for a peaceful adults-only stay among Leicestershire hills and countryside, or as a base for day trips to London under an hour and a half away: either way, spectacular views come as standard.

Run by friendly and helpful Wendy and Maurice, Barford Top is 12 miles from the city of Leicester and seven from Market Harborough; London is an hour and a half from the latter. The site has been set up as a peaceful retreat for guests to stay in a land of spectacular sunsets, sunrises and top stargazing because of the region's low light pollution, and in a wildlife haven where you should be able to spot sparrowhawks, buzzards and rabbits.

Barford Top is right in the Leicestershire countryside with views from all its pitches over the surrounding valley and hills. It has a large entrance gate and spacious drive with plenty of room to turn, free hot water for showers, and free use of The Barn for all guests, an indoor facility with seating and a washing-up area.

Have just returned from a couple of nights here. Perfect location in the heart of rural Leicestershire with stunning views. Wendy and Maurice were perfect hosts providing us with lots of information. The pitches on the touring field are flat with spectacular views. "The Barn" houses toilet/shower facilities, washing up facilities. It also has a small chill out area with a couple of sofas, which might be useful if you were camping. All the facilities were spotless and we can't fault any of it. We never had to wait to use any of the facilities. There's a pub in Saddington which is a 20minute walk, serving food (which we didn't sample). There's some lovely walks and cycle routes in the area. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is ideal. We think it's excellent value for money and we can't wait to go back.

Just got back from a wonderful short weekend break here! Wendy and Maurice were so welcoming and very detailed about the area. The work they have put into the site is very impressive. The loos are modern in a converted old barn and of course, very clean. They've really made an effort to make the communal areas nice and homely. The biggest plus for us was there were no children on the site :) The views are amazing and there are some good dog walking spots around. Will definitely be back for longer next time.

Local attractions

No need for a long face if you fancy some horse riding while in the region: Barford Top is half a mile from the village of Mowsley where horse riding is available, and a riding school is at Market Harborough seven miles away (stick around Market Harborough afterwards for antique and boutique shopping, or go on to Lutterworth for seventeenth century Stanford Hall).

The bridleway from Mowsley leads to the village of Laughton a mile and a half away, and from here it’s another mile down the road to the very old village of Gumley and Bell pub. Coming back, keep an eye out for wildlife of the Saddington Reservoir including kingfishers, little egrets and damselflies.

From Mowsley and on foot, have a scenic wander towards Laughton Hills and then down to the Grand Union Canal towpath; follow this for another couple of miles to reach the Grade II-listed Foxton Locks, the famous landmark of ten ascending locks and part of Leicestershire’s boating heritage for over two hundred years.

The Foxton Locks Inn on Gumley Road is a good spot for a virtuous post-walk pint and a bite to eat; if you’re sticking around the locks and canal after this, there’s a country park at the top of the locks, the award-winning Foxton Canal Museum museum halfway down them, and passenger trips or boat hire along the canal.

The historic village of Kibworth is four miles in the other direction from Barford Top and was featured in Michael Wood’s BBC series on the story of England from Roman times until the end of World War II. Residents have developed heritage trails around Kibworth Harcourt, Kibworth Beauchamp and Smeeton Westerby, and the village also has a golf club, cricket club and bowling.

Plenty of other city and country attractions and activities are within easy driving distance, like boating, fishing and climbing on and around Europe’s biggest artificial lake Rutland Water, and exploring Leicester with its huge covered market, cathedral and buildings from Roman times.

The National Forest, on the outskirts of Leicester towards Burton upon Trent, has forest and discovery parks, historic halls and houses, and animal attractions including Twycross Zoo World Primate Centre and Tropical Birdland.
