  • Peaceful rural Herefordshire glamping site with easy access to walks
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and half an hour from Hereford
  • Stunning views over the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons
Get a load of the gorgeous glamping units at The New Inn, a spacious site in the tiny Herefordshire village of Brilley on the Welsh borders, then soak up the vast views over the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park. Had your fill of seeing the scenery from afar? Dive deep into it during a walk: this is fine wandering country as trails run from the site’s gates out into the rural surrounds and on to the Offa’s Dyke Path. Bike rides are popular too, and the folk here can hook you up with a hire company that delivers to your door if you’ve not been able to bring wheels. You could also amble down to the River Wye for a bit of canoe paddling (25 minutes’ walk) or browse for books in the literary town of Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive). After roaming the countryside, come back to your characterful and eco-conscious glamping unit in the grounds of an 18th-century stone house that was once a drovers inn. A stream runs through the site and there’s plenty of space to chill out and take in the views. Each of the units also has its own private outdoor area, along with access to a private bathroom and kitchen facilities. Dogs are welcome at this park as long as dog owners are attentive, but please note that the accommodation is not suitable for kids under the age of seven. There is a very friendly flock of sheep roaming about from the smallest recognised breed of sheep in the world, the Ouessant sheep from the Channel Islands. There is also a family of Golden Guernsey goats in the enclosure, which add some character to the flock.

Bijou on-site touring caravan

Liked: The location is quite peaceful up in the hills, with only minor traffic noise. Both the Bijou and the Dewachen were really kitted out very well, with everything we needed, including hot water, a bbq, fire pit, outdoor bath/shower, mains electricity, and comfy duvets.

Disliked: The only small issue we had was that we’re both 1m90 tall, and the beds were too short in Bijou, so we moved from Bijou to Dewachen, which Daphne kindly arranged.

Local attractions

When your attention turns to adventures, as it surely will during a trip to this region, start off with the pursuits near the park. Canoe hire is 25 minutes’ walk away, while Clifford Castle and the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are within 10 minutes’ drive. If you’re here to tour the countryside, bound off to the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) for hilly hikes among the lush greenery; a horse riding school is the same distance away if you’d prefer to potter through the landscape aboard an animal. Keen to see more creatures? Set off for the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (15 minutes) to ooh and ahh over miniature critters. Change things up with a trip to Brobury House & Gardens (15 minutes), a Victorian home on the River Wye, and the Neolithic site of Arthur’s Stone (20 minutes). For city slicking, Hereford (half an hour) has a cathedral, Black and White House Museum, and a cider museum to flit between.
