General

  • Small family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Steps away from woodland walks and 10 minutes' stroll from pub/shops
  • Playground, small pond, football pitch, games room and treehouse

It might be a small site, but you'll find quite the heap to do for big folks and kids at and around Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park near Ross-on-Wye.

First up there's the fishing within a couple of miles… And then there's the playground on site, in a scenic and spacious setting (check out the site pics) which also comes with a small pond, a five-a-side football pitch, a games room, indoor table tennis and – huzzah! – a treehouse.

Woodland walks are steps away from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounding countryside.

Haywood is a family-run site a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and with a decent range of guest amenities including showers, a toilet block, disabled facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and recycling. Gas cylinders and ice pack freezing are also available for guests.

Pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport are 10 minutes' walk away.

Great campsite in a lovely location. The children loved the park and the woods to play in too. The lady is very chilled and is happy for you to pick a spot of your liking and even offers electrical extension leads to assist is your perfect spot. There are great walks from the camp site. Clean facilities and the fire pit and wood hire are a must for marshmallows in the moonlight! Only 20 minutes from Symonds Yat we had a fab stay and went back again the following weekend. My girls were 8 and 10 and it was lovely to watch them play from our tent. They had a brilliant time! Thank you.

Bathrooms were great. Covid guidelines were adhered to - felt very safe. Nice woods to walk with our dog right off the campground. Little shop had fire wood and supplies in case we needed them which was nice and the fact they provide fire pits was a nice touch as well. Had a good time for 2 nights and I would stay again. It's not so big that you have to go far to get to the toilets or washing up area and they are nicer accommodations than other campsites I've been out.

    Disliked:

Further away in a walking sense from shops and pubs should we need groceries or a pub lunch but that is completely outside the campsites control (and the shops are a quick drive away). Only real negative of the campsite was that we paid for a pitch of a certain size and when we turned up they weren't clearly marked so our group that were showing up at different times had a risk of not being nearby to each other. It didn't end up being an issue but if this had been pre-covid times (or post covid times) it may have been a problem.

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds from the farm and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away.

The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes.

The Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park team also firmly states that the nearby International Centre for Birds of Prey must be visited: it's the oldest birds of prey centre in the world and has lots of opps for seeing many sorts of raptors up close. Go: it's eggscellent.

Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (It should also be pointed out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.)

Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25.

Must see

  • Eastnor Castle (7.1 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (8.0 miles)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (10.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Westbury Court Garden (8.4 miles)
  • Ashleworth Tithe Barn (8.6 miles)
