General

  • Small family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Lots to do; fishing, football, pond, play area, games room and more
  • Steps away from woodland walks

It might be a small site, but you'll find quite the heap to do for big folks and kids at Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park in Ross-on-Wye.

First up there's the fishing... And then there's the playground, in a scenic and spacious setting (check out the site pics) which also comes with a small pond, a five-a-side football pitch, a games room, indoor table tennis and – huzzah! – a treehouse.

Woodland walks are steps away from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounds.

Haywood is a family-run site a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and with a decent range of guest amenities including showers, a toilet block, disabled facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and recycling. Gas cylinders and ice pack freezing are also available for guests.

Pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport are ten minutes' walk away.

landscape is nice with plenty of natural wind breaks from plants. hot showers, good basic facilities and table tennis as a bonus. owner seem very chill and gave us few chooses to pitch our tent.

    Disliked:

not always someone at office for check in etc, occasionally lack of toilet rolls, and a little crowded at times when busy. didn't realise there are extra toilets upstairs until last day, a sign by the stairs would be helpful. only one hand dryer which we used as a hair dryer.

Nice basic site, lady on arrival friendly and welcoming. In quite a good position for visiting nearby towns :- Hereford, Monmouth,Gloucester etc. We used the local bus service and found that good for Gloucester and Ross.Facilities were clean, the site is great for families with children as there is large areas for them to play and also a play area with climbing frame.

    Disliked:

The hard standing pitches seem to be too close to each other (fire risk?) and there were only 2 showers for each men and women to cover the whole site so at busy times it would be a problem.

The camp site was nice and relaxed and the owners offered a range of pitches for us to chose as there was space. We picked a lovely pitch that overlooked the play park which was great for our younger children as we could still keep an eye on them.

    Disliked:

The only negative was that there could be more toilets/showers.

We had a spacious pitch which we chose on arrival - great to have EHU and campfires (good logs at £5 a bag) not far from motorway so easy to explore the area. Good cycling canoeing and hiking nearby
    Campsite always had hot water

    Disliked:

The facilities were clean on arrival (saturday) but it was pot luck after that - showers and toilets were regulary dirty/lacking in soap: tissue etc.
The site was not full although busier at week end. A mop was left to clean after a shower, but it was filthy itself.
There was an occasional waft from the Elsan disposal 🤢

Play area was brilliant, right next to the trees, kids felt like they were on an adventure.

    Disliked:

The amenities could be better but they served the needs, queue for the toilet and shower each time needed, they were also very tired. But they worked.

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds away from the farm and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away.

The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes.

The Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park also firmly state that the nearby International Centre for Birds of Prey must be visited: it's the oldest birds of prey centre in the world and has lots of opps for seeing many sorts of raptors up close. Go: it's eggcellent.

Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (We'd also like to point out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.)

Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25.

Must see

  • Eastnor Castle (7.0 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (8.0 miles)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (10.9 miles)

  • Ashleworth Tithe Barn (8.9 miles)
